Ride Gear - Shoes, Helmets, Gloves, Suits, etc

I'd like a new current relevant post because all my searching is yielding older posts and new gear comes out every year. What gear do you use that is effective and functional for the type of riding you do. (Helmet, gloves, shoes, boots, wet-suits, etc.) What do you wear in colder water/weather and what kind of colder temps are we talking about: 50°, 60°, 70° ?

I rock 4" stiletto heels, bedazzled, obviously. I still have my cousins little pink tutu, with white lace ruffles, which look AMAZING with my superjet, and I have these fabulous, chartreuse laced up to the wrist gloves. All weather gear, while maintaining form and function. (although you have to back down on the underpad, or the heels get stuck). I've found that anything 4mil and up, makes my thighs look fat.

I go to the closeout sections of whatever site and buy the cheapest mtb and mx gear i can find. I wear a jettribe farmer john style 2/3 wetsuit in everything from cool spring, ocean, or 40degree winter flood waters.

40 degree winter water? Darn, man. I've had to shovel the ramp, and use my tiara to chop the ice to ride.

Buuuutttt.... I agree. Closeouts are where it's at. More money for gas!

Normal gear is normal ankle socks, thicker is nice since I kick into TIGHT foot holds and feet get sore. I used to use the jet tribe socks but always rip and I have no muscles to hold the sock up haha. Turf soccer cleats, traction of cleats but not the wear and tear on the turf. CG approved jetpilot life vest. I should wear a helmet more, usually only do on new tricks if I am at all worried of eating sh*t. Cold weather just toss on a wetsuit and maybe a head cap

Oh and gloves. Always wear a glove or two lol

Thanks for the reply. Substantive, finally. Question about the shoes...can you shoot a link to what you're talking about? Don't cleats eat up the tray? I hear many riders wear wrestling shoes. What helmet do you use and does it drain well or just soak up water?

Aside from my "pride" outfit, I rock swim shorts (with the lining cut out, just because), a riding jersey with the sleeves cut to be short sleeved, indoor soccer shoes (no socks, but may have to try them now), and a life vest. When it gets chilly, I have a 3mil shorty suit that I can wear on top of a 3mil full suit when it gets really cold. Wet suit booties don't cut it for me, they hold too much water and drag me down. I rock riding gloves, as wet suit gloves are to "unfeely" for me.

When I refer to "riding", I mean mx style stuff. BTW, I rock the shorts and jersey over the wetsuits all the time. "it just feels right"

I also, and I highly recommend this to EVERYONE, rock a MX style kidney belt. I've found that I can at least double my tray time with one. They dramatically reduce lower back fatigue, and help keep all my internals in place.

...but I've been told my calves look sexier in heels, and as long as I check for pimples prior to riding, the tutu does wonders for my butt.

I have 3mm 5mm and 7mm wetsuits depending on the temp. My favorite boots/shoes are actually bass pro flats boots that are designed to be worn over waders. https://www.basspro.com/shop/en/world-wide-sportsman-flats-boots-for-men I ended up with 2 sizes smaller than my usual to get the right fit, but they have good grip and they don`t wear through like the dive boots that I was using before. I almost never wear gloves or a helmet.

Correct soccer cleats eat up the turf, however I use turf soccer cleats. These have little rubber knobs on the bottom and bit into the tray but do not eat the turf as badly as plastic cleats.

Biggest thing is the material of the shoes. I have found synthetic materials will always have a slippery feel where as the closer you get to a kangaroo leather or material close to that that absorbs water will have a better "bite" into your footholds. This material seems to act like a sponge, like the padding in your footholds, that you get it wet and kick in. When you kick in the water is gone and the hold has a suction like feel, that means you are locked. Best thing is when you fall off and your footholds are in the water they are easy to remove depending on how tight you have your holds.

For surf use I would use these too. I don't ride in the surf to have enough of a vote but wore them on my SJ last year for a quick trip and had great traction for a tray with no straps. More bite than wrestling shoes and less wear than grass soccer cleats.

My helmet is just a motorcycle helmet. ANSWER RACING is the brand. The helmet is a few years old so I don't think they make the same one any more. I never noticed the helmet soaking up with water and get too heavy to use. Of course it would get wet and absorb some but never really had any negatives with the helmet minus that with big helmets your ears are now covered and I don't like riding and not hearing the motor so now I only use the helmet when nervous on attempting something.

The indoor soccer shoes I wear are adidas samba K. They're from WAY back in the day when I played every travel team possible. They are kangaroo leather, and mike b is dead on correct about how they act when wet.

Those^^^ jet tribe boots look legit! I may have to try them. How does their sizing run? Comparatively to a name brand sneaker?

I prefer either slippery or JetPilot shoes. Get about 2 - 3 years out of them. Tried those new H2oX shoes (what ever they were called), may have needed a larger size, but was not to my liking.

I called them to inquire before I bought. Was told they run about a 1/2 size big. So if your a 10 1/2 get a 10. They sell out fast so at the moment can only get a size 6 or 7 I believe. But if you call maybe they give a diff answer.

Bare in mind the World Finals are being held at the beginning of next month near you (everything is relative - I'm in Australia) in Lake Havasu. Many retailers have stalls there and sell stuff at discounted rates, particularly discontinued lines.

True. I just won’t make it there this year.

I bought these today...hopefully they work okay for footholds. Anyone else using them? I wanted to see how they felt. Looked like good support and they seem to have good reviews. As a newbie and older rider (44), I want to preserve my ankles.

UPDATE: Do not like. Returned. They ran much larger than what I was told by customer service. They were actually pretty uncomfortable and flexibility minimal. I ended up with some neoprene socks and Asics. Which I found extremely comfortable. Super lightweight and gave me the ankle support I was looking for without compromising comfort/flexibility.
