Other In-Shop Tuning?

Is it worth tuning your carb in the shop on the hose, or does the pump have to be under a load to get it right?
Is there a rule of thumb for compensating for the lack of load when tuning out of the water?

You can get it somewhat close, but there is no substitute for having the driveline under load.

IMHO, it's wasting time that could be better spent tuning on the water.

There was an article about tuning your low speed like that. involves adjusting your idle and low speed to the point of where if you turn the low speed any amount either way the motor would start to run rough.

Like Matt said, you can get close, but on water the best.

Buy a kiddie pool....I have been battling some cooling issues the past few days. Driving back and forth from my house to the boat ramp is getting old. The gas and time I have wasted probly could of bought me a few.

Two problems with that:

1. It will make a mess of the pool water.
2. You cannot put the driveline under full load. You'll be hardly above idle.

I wasn't going to putt around in there, I was thinking about securing it up against the wall -
probably not going that route though

my mate at yamaha have like a dyno tank its just a huge metal tank can take a 3 seater sit down

they wedge the nose into the wall and full gass and do a 90% tune there then once at the dam its just small tweeking

Yes, I understand putting it against the wall - that's how test tanks at PWC shops work. And you would not be able to put much load on it at all.
Also, the water will end up outside your pool.
You can do the same thing on the trailer backed into the water, or put the ski up against a dock. In my experience, this will really only tell you if you have very obvious tuning problems.
