Other How to change to 1X9 gears

I am about to pick up a full suspension bike used. I want to change it to a 1X9 set up. I have found it is very rare for me to change the front gears on the trails around here. A lot of up and down hills. Plus I like the simple aspect of the handle bars not having a shifter on one side.

My question is what kind of setup should I go with for a chain tensioner? I have seen a few different setups and not sure what would be the best for my type of riding.

Thanks

1x9 uses the rear derailleur for chain tension just like any other setup. On the front, replace the big ring with a bashguard and get something like an N-Gear Jump Stop. Those 2 items will keep the chain from jumping off either side of your middle ring.

SRAM is coming out with a dedicated 1x11 setup I seem to remember.

Yeah I might go 1X10 need that extra low gear for a few hills. But it is on the back burner for now. I was out riding yesterday and snapped the chain stay by the weld. From what I have read it is common on the gary fisher bikes.

It is a 08 garyfisher hifi deluxe. So I am waiting to find out from the bike shop if trek will warranty it.

If they dont have the part, then they will probably send you a Trek EX 8 or EX 9. A riding buddy cracked his EX8, they shipped him an EX9 with the new rear shock plus the headset so he could still run his straight taper fork on it.

26" HiFi? My buddy has a 2010 29" HF Deluxe full suspension, sweet ride and he got it for 1/2 retail used off a guy that needed the money. Hopefully he doesn't have that kind of problem because the warranty is only good to the original purchaser.

From what I have been reading it is pretty common on the Gary Fishers. Most people have had trek just send them the x9 frame. But still gonna cost me a chuck of change to get the shop to switch all the parts over.

Well seems they wont replace it since I don't have proof of purchase. No offer to give a discount on a new frame or nothing. So I can tell you that I won't be buying trek stuff any more.

You need to find a dealer to rep you .... and pay them to do the change over . They make good money and you get the customer service ... I did this years ago with a Kline Attitude I was the second owner.

Well you got hooked up Kevin. I am the second owner and they wont do it because I am not the first owner. Just don't understand it is still under warranty so they should stand behind their product and fix it. So screw them I am buying a Santa cruz heckler frame brand new and switching all the stuff over. That way I have a warranty on that frame and from I hear they are bomb proof and rarely ever break,

Why a Heckler? Good frame but overkill for XC riding. Look at the Blur XC or find a Titus Motolite/FTM. Also your front fork most likely will not have enought travel for that frame. Think it is designed for around 150-160 mm travel.

I have heard good things about that frame being bomb proof and holding up well. Yeah my fork is 120mm so might go up to like 150mm. I want a frame that is going to be able to handle a good beating if I want to ride more. Some of the advanced trails around here can be pretty rough so no exactly sure if i would call it XC riding that I am doing or plan to do in the future. Plus they have the size I need on sale for 550 with the rear shock.

Guy that rides here has one. Overkill here but he travels a good bit to areas where it fits the ridding better.

So It has gotten out of control with this bike. I bought a new frame (santa cruz heckler) it was a on sale for 550 with rear shock new. Then found out my 120mm fox fork wouldn't be the best for it so sold that on ebay and bought a 150mm fox float fork 2011 model so got it for better then half msrp. Found out my front wheel wouldn't work on the 15mm through axle on that fork. So bought some a new wheel set and sold the old ones. Also bought all the stuff I need to make it a 1X10 bash guard 32t sprocket new cassett 11-36 chain guide. New grips and a new saddle soon. But I am sure I will be happy when it all gets done and is a bad ass fun bike to ride.
