Other Newbie from Texas

Hey I am new to the forum and currently in the market for a jet ski. I am leaning towards either a older super jet or a 750sx. I am looking to keep the budget under $2000. I have never owned a jet ski before but have ridden sit downs. I almost bought one last summer but decided to build my ducati motorcycle instead. After going out on the lake all day yesterday it really made me want to get my own ski. I have been doing research but any pointers would be great on what to watch out for when buying a jet ski. Hopefully in about two or three weeks I will have all the cash together pick one up so in the meantime I will be all over the site researching!

Welcome to the X, Lawnmaster891! A lot of members here are going to say to get the superjet over the 750sx. There is several good reasons for that choice. I see you are in Ft. Worth, I ride my ski in D/FW all the time. There is a lot of us skiers in D/FW and you should come out and check out the skis we have before you buy one.

Welcome to the Forum, 9/10 people will say Yamaha Superjet. There are more threads on this than anyone would want to count on "Which ski to get". Browse through this section (general) and you will see many other threads on this subject. Seems like one pops up ever day or so.

Again, welcome to the X!

Thanks for all the advice. I will def have to get out and check some setups. What lakes does everyone in the dfw go to? I have been eyeballing craigslist and found a few of both super jets and 750sx's. The more I read the more it sounds like I should just pick up a superjet. What are reasonable prices for both older superjets and 750sx?

I started on a sxr and just now bought a SJ. My opinion is the sxr is a great all around ski, esp for learning. Its much more stable than the SJ but thats b/c the SJ is much lighter. Now that i have ridden both i am liking the SJ a little more but the sxr is definitely a great ski and can do all the same stuff as a SJ (just not jump as high). I know your saying 750s but if you can i'd save a little more for an sxr/SJ. I've been riding the sxr for 4 years and its a blast, only snagged a SJ b/c the deal was right. My 04 sxr is for sell but prob more than you want to spend.

Got a friend with a SN 701 ported all the goodies he is asking 2k but prob would take 1800.00
Dont waste your time or money for a kawi unless you wanna race IMHO
We ride Lewisville on sat and sun I ride Hubbard during the week

I may be very interested in the SN701. Like I said though I still have about 2 to 3 weeks before I will have all the money set aside. If he still has it then I will def be interested in taking a look. I live on the north side of fort worth near where 35w and 820 intersect. I work from 3 till late so I would most likely be out on weekends

If you want to try some skis, lake Lewisville and Grapevine both have a standup group there on the weekends. Come out with some swim trunks and we can help you with the rest for a test ride. Just post up which lake you wantt to go to and we'll get you directions.

I've ridden a lot of skis and prefer Superjets. SXRs are great for racing/ carving IMO, if you think youll want to do any tricks, SJ is the way to go. You can pick up a Square nose (SN) SJ for about 2k with a 701, like skinny an said. That's a really really good place to start.

GL and welcome to the X.

That would be great. Either lake would be fine. My duc is a 98 monster 900 that i have done quite a bit of work to. I have installed fcr carbs, lightweight flywheel, intake, exhaust, rearsets, clipons, scotts dampener, a good amount of carbon, and a bunch more. It was bone stock when i bought it last june. I have done all the mods and maintenance myself. Its a blast to ride :

just buy an old 650sx (running) for cheap and see if you like it and go from there. i know i had 2 or 3 before i decided to make the leap to superjet

This cracks me up! If he has the cash to buy an SJ up front then don't waste the time on 650SX. It's like settling for the mediocre girl when you really want the cute one.

I did the same thing, flipped a couple SXs before I found a killer deal on a SN.

The hyper is an awesome bike. I got a deal I couldn't pass up from a family member on my bike. I am on a local ducati forum as well so we go on many group rides and I have gotten the chance to ride some pretty nice bikes. One of my favorites was a 999 with ohlins suspension. Anyways, Yes I am looking to get into freestyle, plus I am tall and skinny so after more reading I am def leaning more toward the lighter weight of the Superjet.

i only said to get somethin cheap because he said hes never ridden a jet ski before.. all my buddies who i tried to get into riding cant even ride my superjet. personally i would prefer to learn first and see if i like it before i just drop $2000 on something i might not even like. i think every one learned on an old SX or JS so why not start cheap and get the feel for how the sport is.

Thanks for the advice. Hopefully I can hook up for a test ride with someone locally as a couple of the others have said. Hopefully I will like the sport. I love being out on the water and love wakeboarding and, Wake surfing, and other watersports I have tried. The nice thing about if I get my own jet ski is I can go out on my own whenever I want and don't have to rely on others like I do on a boat. Growing up I have always had quads and dirtbikes so I should fit right in with a jet ski. Not saying I will be able to ride a jet ski the greatest but with practice im sure it will come to me. Do any of you wear helmets or other protective gear while in the water?

Most of us wear helmets. If you are attempting to get any air you'll want to get one. Whatever you do don't buy a kawi. They are cheaper for a reason lol
