magicseaweed sux, never gotten much accuracy from it for anything out past 8-12hrs.

I use the local area only forecast sites: 2ndlight.com, surfguru.com, or thewavecaster.com

Or I just walk down the street and look at it.

It's a local/regional thing.

Magic seaweed (for us in north FL) is a "hey...you might want to watch this" kinda thing.

But as far as the waves go locally, I think most faith is put in Dean (the surf station).

When magic seaweed calls for 5', dean calls for 1 to 3. The reason is simple. Either you measure faces of the wave or you measure the back of the wave. The back has always been the true measurement as far back as I can remember.
Magic seaweed predicts faces....which is impossible without a complete understanding of sandbars and other irregular bottom features that affect the face.

This might not be the case in Texas, or anywhere else.

But, here in North FL, Magic seaweed might tell me somethin's comin', But The Surf Station will be what I watch.

Or I'll walk across the street and see for myself.

My point was that local surf reports might come from little surf shops, but those little surf shops understand the shoreline that they report on.

Magic seaweed doesn't have a guy/gal that surfs St. Augustine daily. The surf Station does.

NOAA has the most current info available to the general public. The surf websites pull their info from there and make it user friendly while adding coastal observation/interpretations at times, but as Dre always said, "you never know, unless you show".

True, but the closest NOAA buoy is about 40 miles offshore! (here anyway) and it's often wrong because the ledge is 60 miles offshore from Jax/St. Aug.

It's an entirely different ball game from ...say..Fort Pierce, where ther ledge is 5 miles offshore.

(For those not from Florida....the gulfstream, and it's hot water, follow the ledge)

No.

Here is a good link (if you have power):

NOAA has surf reports as well, but they suspend them during hurricanes and such, for SHOULD BE obvious reasons.

Btw Dan, did the last storm have any special benefits to help the spot out any?

Also, today, I read about your back probs; I am very sorry. The Colonel has gone through major surgery within the past year for such (much more serious than your own issues), and now is facing the potential again (currently trying pt with pain management to avoid it if possible).

You're very kind to inquire, but, my neck problems have solved themselves....for now. I'm all good. Just old guy stuff. Seems like they want to cut you for a case of the sniffles anymore. Scare you into spending.

BTW: The last storm,(Irene), was awesome! I didn't ride on Friday. I was up and looking at the waves b4 dawn on Friday. It looked blown out and choppy to me. I watched it throughout the day... the same. Some folks showed up at the spot and had a really good time, but I had my money on Saturday morning.
And Saturday...all day was great! West wind cleaning up the faces...ALL DAY!!! 8 to 10 clean-up sets. Yes a bit smaller than Friday but way cleaner and more ride-able.

Irene, for me, goes down in the record books as some of the most fun since Bill!
