I think, like most people, I have multiple motivators. My number one right now is self motivation, getting pissed at myself when I pass on a wave for a new trick or not being happy with a trick that is close but not right yet. All though, friendly competition - trying to one up someone (or catch up to someone) is pretty effective to.

what gets you guys going?

Right now since I am kinda new to the sport again I am self motivated, I'm competing against what I used to be able to do (which was not much). However having Matt to ride with pushes me. He's light years ahead of me now. . . gimme another season or two however and we'll see. . . .

Unfortunately I am one of two standup owners I know of in this state. And the other one was on an SXR, I never saw him again. There's no one I know thats into standups, although all my friends see mine and go "I want one of those!" Im self-motivated because I really want to get good at jetskiing.

Videos help a lot, and have showed me all the things that are possible. They've showed me a lot of cool ways to transition from hood tricks, into fountain, etc. Im a flatwater rider, and whenever theres a storm, theres 5 foot chop, but its usually very close together (10 feet at MOST) so its tiring and hard to line up a good jump. Without these forums I wouldnt of even considered getting a standup, and now Im considering holding off getting a car until next year because I need a bigger engine

Definitely watching movies with good music. I know everyone hates the wakeboard boats with the loud speakers, but when I was wakeboarding a lot back in high school I would always ride a lot harder and go a lot bigger when I had the right type of music blasting from the tower.:headbang:

Definetly friendly competition. Being the first to pull it off in my group of friends or riding with people better than me definatly makes me want to step it up a notch.

here is one of my favorite posts on the board, apperntly Pat Bogart needs negative comments to push him.

Well I witnessed greatness again today. Pat landed the backflip with a twist out at the lake today. He's been blasting them off boat wakes for a few weeks, but unable to pull it off. I was giving him my usual "you just can't do it" pep talk and he looked me in the eye and said "Alright I'm landing this one bitch". It's was breathtaking to see and I was probably as excited watching it as he was doing it. This trick has definately raised the bar and you can tell by the determination out on the water. I would like to also thank Pat for all his hard work on helping me build my new ski , affectionately known as "grumpy JR." We as riders are blessed to have such a great guy be riding in our sport along with a businessman who tries to figure out what kind of parts need to be built for our ski's to maintain the constant abuse that we put them through. So everyone congradulate Pat on his latest trick, with hopefully many more to follow. "That's just how he rolls"

Doing a flatwater BR is one of my current BIG motivators. But mostly it's just the awesome feeling of RIDING that gets me out. I've gone to the lake a million times and not wanted to go (esecially if I'm going to be there alone), but . . . I've never left the lake and been sorry I went. I force myself to remember that every time that I feel like NOT going but have an opportunity.

Heh....I like watching what other's can do, via vids and pics from the boards.
I have no one to ride with that's better than me - so that sort of competition is out.
I do like pushing myself - my goal for this year is a flatwater BR (any BR!) before season's up. Dammit, if I have to ride until December 31st, so be it.

I must admit that I like the friendly competition. I usually ride my best with someone that is better than me or when I can mimic someone. Squid, Sjweber and Superjett have all pushed me to get better in different areas. I mainly ride with Squid and he has allot of confidence in what I can do b/c I have been riding with him since I could only do subs and fountains. Superjett knows allot about riding and the mechanics of skis so I like talking to him about the way skis are set up and perform. I consider myself a tinkerer/gearhead and SuperJett is as well so it is nice to have someone to bounce ideas off of in that respect. Sjweber has shown me new tricks and has allot of enthuaism for the sport that pumps me up everytime we ride.

I have also done some of my best riding by myself b/c that is when I start to pay more attention to the boat and how cleanly I do tricks so I self motivate myself in that respect.

Off the water I like watching videos..........which sucks b/c everything looks easy in videos :banghead: I will get there eventually. :cheer: :woot:

Watching how awesome everyone else is and how bad I suck. Its hard to take in effect the amount of money everyone has in their ski and mine is stock :haha: I just think, screw that, mine should be able to do that too :haha: Oh well, maybe when I get some more brap.........or balls I can do more

I like to imagine some chick is going to be watching from shore and then fall madly in love with me and my "skills" but then I realize I don't have any skills and there are never chicks watching from the beach. So mostly whenever I need motivation I drive 7 hours to Jersey and ride with Pancaker and the rest of the crew there. It is a whole different world there compared to where I ride. Having guys to go out with that are riding at an elite level makes you want to work toward something instead of just riding around doing the same old stuff.

Yeah I agree with Pete. I've had the honor of learning to ride with some really talented people. If not for them, I would probably still be learning how to turn.
