Custom/Hybrid Kawi pump vs Yamaha pump in a custom hull....

Let say you could have either option, a kawi mag pump or a yamaha mag pump for a custom ski, which would you choose?

Would there be a difference in performance since you can get a mag pump at whatever size you want?

If there won't be a difference in performance is the kawi setup better because midshafts, changing impellers on a yamaha etc make the yamaha setup a headache?

I prefer the Kawi type also . Pump design is easier to work with prop changes , 1 piece stator / wear ring section eliminates a place for a leak , and like the way the driveshaft goes straight through the bulkhead with no intermediate shaft to deal with.

you are some lazy people. whats so much harder with a yamha pump?the kaw drive shaft housing is a joke. they last about as long as a kawe motor does. i guess if you ride in a lake there ok.

If you have a chance to make something more simple and easier does that make you lazy?

Whats wrong with a kawi driveshaft housing? (seriously asking) I've never had an issue with any except a WSM one I had that rusted in a month on a freshwater lake..

I like the kawi driveline design better also but mostly because it doesn't require all the anal alignment that SJ's do. Though I think alignment in an aftermarket hull will still be required so you're stuck on that one. Driveshaft replacement is a cakewalk. Prop changing is a cakewalk. Some of the drawbacks I see with the kawi design is the wear ring. On a superjet, you can just replace that one piece if it wears out but a kawi requires a whole new pump. A stock SJ pump has more prop options for freestyle riders but if you're going with a mag, that's a moot point.

If by that you mean 15-20 years, then yes you are very correct.

All things equal, will a kawi mag give you the same hookup/performance as a yammy mag pump? I was going to build up a project hull but I would have to run the kawi pump. I HATE 650 kawi pumps I could never get them to hookup anywhere near my yamy pumps. WIll a 750/800 140/145 mag pump perform like a SJ 144 mag? I hate the yammy midshafts..lol

I think I would go with a yammi pump myself. Yes its harder to change prop. I do however like the fact you can just replace the liner easily

lol 15-20 weeks maybe. the bearing housing blows out like nothing. i guess if you ride in a puddle its good. just dont jump more then 4 feet in the air.

2004-2010 Never had one single issue with my Kawi Pump in my SXR.

1999-2010 It is a mother chucker to remove the prop on my SJ Pump. I have destroyed pump tools. Yes, I have used grease, Antisieze, Dry.......... Oil........you name it. I dread each time I go to remove it. My liner needs replacing, but I have just used the dremal to clearance it where it is swelling in places..........

Yeah, the SJ pump is the king................. of crap.

Oh, been through 3 intermediate shafts, 3 drive shafts on the SJ pump as well.

Seadoo and Polaris pumps are also much easier to work on. That Yamaha setup is awkward.

Kawasaki pump and driveline are much better than yamaha. In all my years of riding kawi's I've never blown out a bearing carrier

to each his own. just like the guys that cant keep bearings in mag pumps.works for me no issues. i have 800 to 1000 hours on my mid shaft and bearing. (now its going to blow up) lol .nothing but salt and waves.
the kawe housing rots out in about a year or 2.

that's exactly what i asked me 1 year ago when i began my pump swap on the Fx1 .
having the 2 pumps on the garage now i prefer working on the kawi ... way more fast to change a prop or work on the pump (bearing change is so easy)
on the other side the yami as a cheaper relining solution. (i ride on salt water) When i swap the prop for a hooker my stock liner was out and the new prop doesn't even turn in it ...

your doing somthing wrong. same shafts since i got my ski back in 92. "dremaling" the liner is your 1st issue.

Uh, liner swelled from salt water intrustion. Only way to keep using it now is to clearance it or replace........... And that was the last issue I have had with a Yamaha pump. Granted, it is over 10 years old. This was early spring when I put the ski back together.

The only problem area with Kawasaki pumps is the impeller to shaft seal on aftermarket props. Its easy to get sand in the splines of a Yamaha any time the pump is pulled causing very rapid wear. The Kawasaki is easier if you are picky about maintenance.
