would "bad rings" cause a ski to smoke alot?

if so, can you help me understand how? seems like amount of smoke would not change since fuel, oil and air mixture would be unaffected by loss of compression. sorry, i'm dumb with this stuff.

maybe on a 4 stroke but not a 2stroke..

on a 4stroke if oil makes it past the rings, it will smoke... thats why old cars smoke down the road..

if you have "bad rings" on a 2stroke, youre minutes away from engine failure.

thanks edwin.

what would be the causes of a ski smoking more than normal. could a stale batch of gas cause this.

and will a compression check rule out any possibility of a ring issue?

btw, ski is a wb2 with oil injection still in use and supposedly has sat for a while.

but he did say it smoked alot when it was in use regularly

it could be running rich, the oil could be mixed like 32:1 or more, could be old gas, plugs could be fouled... could be a combination of some of those.... could be normal though too..

ive used really expensive oils in the past that smoked like crazy.. ive used el-cheapo gas station oil that smoked like crazy!

a compression test is always a good idea, imho.. i checked mine yesterday.. 185psi all around!

Here is what I have seen, the Yamaha pumps have no adjustments, they are setup to run a certain viscosity of oil, they tend to over oil especially when the unit gets older,I am assuming it is because of clearances in the oil pump loosening up and pumping more oil,it can also be because a thinner than stock oil is being run through the pump and it is actually pumping more oil.The best solution is as what was stated earlier ,remove the pump and the tank and go premix 50 to 1 ratio.

thanks. i would convert it if i bought it.

i'm just trying to make sure i dont buy a money pit. and according to it's owner, the only flaw is it puffs out a "substantial" amount of smoke, which according to him has gotten worse over the years. he attributed it to "bad rings"

thanks for the input guys. the ring theory didn't seem to make sense to me but i dont trust my intuition when it comes to knowing motor stuff.

i'll have compression tester in tow if i go look at it.

ha! already gone.

i think bad rings would make a ski smoke more. most of the oil gets seperated from the fuel and if your getting blowby it would burn more oil.
