Why didn't my lanyard work?

I managed to fall off today and the ski just took off in a straight line. A little bit later, it hit someone's dock and then shut off. Luckily it was only idling and even more luckily, it didn't hit anyway or any boats. When I got to the ski, I tested the lanyard and it shut the ski off just fine. I couldn't make the switch stick either.

Any ideas...I put the lanyard on specifically to avoid this.

Yeah I did turn the idle down quite a bit after that incident because the ski used to circle. I guess it was going too fast this time to circle. It didn't free rev...it just chugged along at a bit above idle until it hit the dock and then it shut off.

No idea if it was only ticking over , known it happen at high revs, also does your ski not circle back to you ? i dont run a lanyard as they get in the way when riding and keep pulling the dam things off , my tickover is low and the ski returns it self nice, if i know im going in i hit the stop switch ,

If you are elecrically inclined, you can take the switches apart and clean the contacts if needed, see if the rubber seals are torn and letting water in, etc.

I had this same problem,it started with me having to push the stop switch really hard to cut it off,I checked the lanyard and sure enough it wasn't working,I started taking it apart trying to find out why,it seemed like the stop button wasn't going in far enough to make good contact with the switch.

I did several things there ,none of which worked. Then I went into the switch itself, what I found was corrosion on the contact surfaces,I hit the two round posts with a flat file and dressed them up and did the same with the round disc,I also took a small amount of material off of the round metal contact piece that the spring goes around.

I reassembled it with some dielectric grease and now its good to go,I do suggest that you check you lanyard for proper operation before each ride,it could save your ass one day or someone elses.

Bingo, that's exactly what to do. Just be careful taking the switches apart as there are small springs/contacts that like to fly out and disappear.

electronics can fail, physics not so much. i have my idle set for a max of ~15seconds and it will choke out. i got the same zip tie on it from when i bought the ski nearly 3 years ago. :)

Apparantly you haven't been reading some of the threads here, your idea is fine until a handle pole snaps or a throttle cable kinks, then what, you have no back up plan.:sad2:

forgot about those thread with the cable sticking.

me personally dont think the juice is worth the squeeze. i'd rather pull the slim chances of the cable sticking than having a lanyard thats going to limit my fun AKA monkey jumps & hoodtricks :)

I am not saying I use one 100% of the time but its there,if there are a lot of people riding around at the same time I use it,you can just as easily wrap it around the bars as using a zip tie, plus a zip tie will get you a ticket ,a lanyard won't.

I have had to personally chase an expensive aftermarket hull big bore ski around a crowded lake when the throttle cable hung causing the ski to go out of control. Myself and Gilgoneround were able to chase the ski and wrangle it to a point where Gil jumped from his boat and was able to hit the stop switch. The ski almost hit a docked boat, then a rocky shoreline and then was headed out into a busy channel. This was a near disaster that could have resulted in someone being hurt or somebody's expensive property being damaged. This was all because the lanyard was defeated with a zip tie. If you don't think a lanyard is a good idea then you are putting yourself in a position to be sued or charged with unsafe operation. Just imagine if your ski goes out of control and hits a child on the shore or someone in a boat and hurts them or worse. You will be liable for this and it could cost you a lot in time, money, lawsuits, and medical bills. I have seen a few near misses due to this and it has convinced me to always run a lanyard. The only time you would not use on IMO is during a sanctioned competition freestyle event where it would impact your ability to do your routine.

carb springs break, cables hang up......no lanyard scares me also

I have been trying to use one for the past few weeks and I hate it everyday..........if anything Ill leave it wrapped around the bars

at least then if it does get away you cant be held responsible for disabling a factory installed safety device
