What size underpadding?

I plan on installing some WaterDawg REVs onto my SXR this winter (well not me...a friend will be doing it since I will be out of town).

After installing the REVs, I was wondering what size underpadding should be used on the bottom of the ski, inside the footholds, and around the tops of the holds.

While riding, I wear size 11 Nike running shoes (I dunno why...they were falling apart and I found them to have great traction on the stock mat).

I was planning on doing 8mm padding on the ENTIRE ski (footholds and all), but after reading some threads I've found many people that liked 25mm.

Remember, I won't be there to test the snugness either. Also, I don't want to buy 8mm and the 25mm padding -- waste of money.

So....
1. Will the 25mm be TOO snug in the holds?
2. What's the best way to pad the ski with 25mm to get a good snug fit (can you "shave off" parts the padding)?
3. If I decide to use 8mm padding, can I turf the entire ski with it and have enough snugness in the holds?
4. Is 8mm enough for comfort?
5. I read that some people layered the 8mm in the middle of the tray...is this a good idea?

Basically, whats the best scheme for padding with my size shoe?

I did dual 8 mm layers on the floor and padded with single 8 mm in the holds. Hydroturf sells smaller sheets of 25 mm if you ask for it. In hindsight, I'd go for 25 mm. This was on a RN, BTW. I do surf riding, the padding saves my knees on rough landings...

Sospikey, is the dual 8mm layers on the floor sufficient though for riding? I ride on Lake Michigan where it can be anywhere from perfectly flat to 8 footers (but usually happens 2-3 times when I'm there).

Will the dual 8mm get the job done?

And if you do the dual padding on the floor and a single 8mm sheet in the holds...can you pad then entire tray with just 1 sheet of the 8mm from hydrotruf or do you need to buy more?

I like the 8 mm.
you can use layers for contours, kick pad, etc.
either would work out- I have 10 1/2 wide feet and my REVs have 8 mm top and bottom + turf.
contoured the 8 mil to make a pocket and kick pad like so. cushy ride!

I ride on a similar (but smaller...) pond here in Sweden. I got a full sheet of 8mm and with some careful layout of the shapes it would possibly do 2 skis with holds and pole pad. There's still plenty left. It is soft (8+8+5 mm) when you add the top mat, it could be even softer using 25 though!
Here's what I would do;
Ask HT to cut a piece of 25 mm that would do the floor. Buy 1/3 of a sheet of 8mm to do the holds and stuff. Finnish it of with your choice of mat (b-stock?)
Why like this? Using the 25 mm means only glueing 1 layer. Less glue, less mess and smell....

you got it backwards...why would you want something that could peel apart when you could have it as 1 piece?

Because with his method you get to huff contact cement for at least an extra hour. :dead1:

The 25mm I used had the self adhesive backing, so it took seconds to install. I was skeptical about how well it would stick, but that crap would not budge if you wanted it to.
