Other upset with machine shop.

Well I took my head in to get shaved,... very fast service got it back next day. The problem is I asked to have .050 shaved to increase my comp. I got the head home and installed it anxious to see how much of an increase I gained. Would you believe only 10#. I could not believe that 50 would only gain me 10, so I pulled the head back off and checked it and the head only had about .020 shaved off. I plan on talking to the shop on Mon. morning, and I only hope that they make it right. Otherwise I just spent money to gain 10#.

yes, I was very specific about that, because there was a question about if I would have enough piston to head clearance with 50 thousanths off. I assured him that there was. The problem I think lies in the guy I talked to was not the same guy that did the work.

I think .050 is way too much! i usually take .035 off and yield 175 psi with about .50 squish. another .015 and your in the .035 squish...way too tight for any engine on pump gas

i had mine shaved .40 thousandths of a standard inch at the local automotive machine shop years ago.im still running 185 psi in one cylinder and 177 in the back after 8 years.

That cannot happen if your using a stock OEM headgasket on a uncut stock height cylinder.
They are .052 thick.
You would have to deck the top of the cylinder to get the piston to come up out past the headgasket to get to .035!
I think you forgot to wear your mask this week, too many fumes Steve.

so if the stock head gasket is .052 and he wants to take out .050 which leaves .002 and the squish clearance in the head area, then what is actually left (in the stock head dome?)
OEM squish on a stock motor is around .085 !

Yes this is for my 550. I talked with the shop this morning, and they said that it was a comunication error, and they would make it right, and only charge me $20. I agreed that that was fair, as I could have made sure that I comunicated with the guy doing the work instead of his flunkie. Next on the list to do is scoop grate, 15 pitch prop, and total loss. What comp. did you get at .040? I am hoping to get mine between 160 -170.

20 more. The shop rate is 40 per hour, and I agreed to meet him halfway at 20 per hour. It will not take an hour to recut.
