Steering fix for UMI..

I'm sure this has been covered a million times, but here's my version..

Ace Hardware - 5/64 SS Cotter pin, 5/64 drill bit..

  1. Drill bolt through nut and post while nut for steering is installed at desired tightness..
  2. Make sure this is the spot you want it...
  3. Use a cutting wax or some oil so you don't burn up the bit right away.
  4. slide pin in the hole to ensure clean fit
  5. bend the pin so it locks into place good and won't slide out
the total cost for this fix is $1.45, I already had the drill bit :Banane01:

My fix was a threaded clamp on shaft collar from McMaster #3014K15 $11.38. I also put it in the mill and machined a flat on each side so a wrench would fit on it. I don’t like channel lock marks.

The same idea but using a castle nut also allows adjustment as bearings wears and also avoids having to drill through the nut!

I'm kinda at a loss as to why you guys need to go through this? I've used red loctite on my boats for years without any unwanted loosening.

It seems hit or miss. I've never had UMI, still using stock, but have seen countless people have problems over the years.

I followed someones instructions in here and shot everything with brake cleaner and then red loc tite. Hasn't budged in weeks.

I like the cotter pin though.
