starting jetting problem.

this is really aggrevating me.

My black boat, 61x 701, stock engine with westcoast head, and coffman sizzler exhuast, and MSD enhancer.

Magoos jetting, shiny spring, 1.5 ns, 120 low, 145 high

it is almost impossible to start.

How do I diagnose this?

its got spark, and the fuel lines/carb are clean.

once its running, it runs OK, seems a little warm to me, maybe slight lean up top, the pipe sizzles HARD after riding. but I might have the water routed strange too.

if it dies in the water though, it is almost impossible to start.

I have gone from one extreme to the other with the lo speed adjuster, and it makes little to know differnce.

any help or advice?

I have read the mikuni manual, it says either low jet is lean, or an air leak when hard to start.

any other help or advice?

Do you have a primer on it?
Have you pressure checked the motor to see if you have a bad crank seal? That will do it for sure...Shiny spring? Does that mean a 65 gram spring?

I have NOT pressure checked the engine.

would it still run OK once its started with that large of an air leak?

Ill just yank it out and swap in my old 650 and build a fresh 701, im tired of chasing this one around.

yes it would run with that big an air leak
i think thats a good place to start with a leak down test
even more so since the low speed adjuster seems to have no effect

Yup...when I knocked a big hole in my case, it started okay and ran okay. Just could not get it tuned.

gotcha guys....

I went out and looked at the plugs.

one is sooty and the other is lean looking, so I figure thats the deal.

an air leak somewhere.

oh well, out it goes, and in goes the back up.

Ill port/bore it while its out.

thanks dudes.

the great pumpkin ski just needs some love dude.

its all there, just needs the details addressed I think.

How is your dual trailer coming?

Im swapping pumps out right now, in the driveway in the dark.

Got news from the machine shop, one of wifes cylionder heads ( chevy tahoe) is cracked.

also a tree limb fell on my little green car last night and dented the rear fender.

I have terrible luck with things that go.

and women for that matter....

I forgot!
how are the reeds in your ski? if they are cracked up it could be making it hard to start and still run once it is started, i had that problem before, once i changed the reeds it was like new.

the reeds are stock, but they seal perfectly well, . I checked them when I installed the engine a month ago.

Did you get the white ski started yet?
------- this is a comment about the white ski, not the black ski --------------
yes, I can start it by jumping the relay, I swapped relays same gig.

I cleaned the on/off switch, no dice.

testing shows the switch working, and voltage going to and from it.

I got aggrevated yesterday and gavce up on it.

I spray painted " SINK ME" on the side of it.

Hollie is pissed at me now.

Ill give it another go today while I am fresh and not so mad.

UPDATE!

an old thread.

Ok, I pulled the head on this engine today to use on another engine.

when I looked at the head, the spark plugs were only half way in the holes.
WESTCOAST head I bought form slutty a couple of years ago.

I was running B8HS plugs in it, and it appears to need B8ES.

dang, im dumb.

would this not explain the boat nearly being IMPOSSIBLE to start in the water, but running ok once started?

I want to swap it back in now, but I need to make sure I understand the issue!

DO you remember the thread where I bought the white swuarenose for $300
?

the dude couldnt get it to start, and blew up the water box with starter fluid?

the boat had a full protech kit, head/pipe, protec intake, rideplate. mats.

he had B8Hs plugs in it, and I could not for the LIFE of me get it started on the trailer, It occured to me on the way home from lunch one day it needed B8es plugs, I stopped by, stuck them in, it started, and scared me to death.

that was 3 or so years ago, you would think I would know better than to use half shaft plugs in an after market head.

yall feel free to kick me in the nuts at the S.F.F. for being such a dumas
