I have a 90 SN SJ with a 701. I just replaced the bendix that was rusted shut and not engaging the flywheel. Under the flywheel was clean and rust free which seemed strange to me with the rusted shut bendix. Maybe I have a leak through the starter?
Anyway, it is cranking over normal, but what is strange is that it will crank over normal a few times, but then bog down like the battery is going dead. Sometimes as it slows down cranking, it will start cranking normal again. Sometimes, it stops cranking and I here the relay in the ebox clicking. Actually I hear that relay click everytime I hit the start button or jump the red/brown to the ebox (I did that in case there was a starter switch issue) each time since the ebox is sitting on top of the ski at the moment. I don't recall being able to hear a relay each time I crank that easily in the past since my hearing is really lousy. But then I try to crank it again, and it cranks fine until it bogs or slows down again. It seems to be a random issue.
So I hooked up the charger, and the battery appears to be fine. The battery is new as well. The same thing will happen even when trying to jump it. It cranks fast and normal, then bogs, then cranks fast again. Sometimes it cranks fast then slows and then STOPS cranking. I have the plugs out and the engine rolls over by hand fine with them out.
I am thinking the starter itself might be flaky, or maybe the relay? Maybe I screwed up the bendix install somehow? I've never had this strange issue before, and figured I'd ask before I dig deeper into it with guessing.
