Pump ring seal pinched..big deal?

Pulled the pump off the SN to change the prop. The rubber pump ring seal/gasket/rubber doohickey is pinched in a couple spots. Like .75" wide where the rubber is flattened out so that the groove in the seal is covered over on those spots. Is this a big deal that could possibly cause cavitation, or am I worrying about nuthin'?

it does that always on one spot, i think near the bottom... must have been that it was removed at one time, and not re installed in the same position, thus making two separate flat spots. Weather or not it will affect performance, I can't say.

Indeed, one of the flat spots was directly on the bottom, the other is at like the 4:00 position. And it was for sure removed before, as there was an AM prop in it.

Good deduction sir!!

just throw some silicone on it when you put it back. you'd be surprised what a small little gap on that seal can make.

I pray you are right and that was the only thing wrong with my wife's SJ. The seal I used was old and pinched. The SJ felt like it had a damn neutral gear until you managed to get going a few MPH, and if you let your speed drop it would basically freewheel. I replaced the seal today. And I put silicone on the gap at the front of my ride plate. Fingers crossed for Sunday's ride.

thats whats wrong with it. same thing happened to me. i put a pump in with a bad seal and it wouldnt go anywhere. the thing wouldnt even go fast enough to plane out, like you said, it felt like it was in neutral or something. i put some silicone around it and have been riding it like that ever since. it was such a small gap on the seal that you couldnt even see it when looking at it once it was bolted up.
