that might be a good deal on the digital 8 from ebay.

Id rather have a Hi-8 though, 2 times as much recording time, and then you can digitize it thru your GOOD camera, or a conversion box.

Ive been looking for a dirt cheap hi8 with a decent optical zoom for that EXACT reason.

Can you play Hi-8 Tapes on a Digital 8 Camera... That might solve my problem.

on most of the little sony units you can, my trv460 will play the older hi-8 tapes, and stream them right out digitally ( in real time) via the fire wire.

so I can record on a cheap 8mm camera and get 120 minutes of video on the same tape.

if you record the same same tape at digital 8, you only get 30 minutes.

but a 2 hour movie is about 30 Gigs once you capture it on your computer.

that's odd i get 60 minutes out of my digital8 tapes, but yeah it will play both hi8 and d8 no prob

i don't use 30 gigs for 60 minutes of raw footage i don't think either.
on my old system i only had a 20 gig hard drive and never ran out of room for one movie. I don't want to sound contradictory to lake but my experience is not the same, i think it was closer to 12 or 15 gigs per 60 min's of raw video
