Motor Questions

Need some advice. I have a 96 sj 701 with head (180psi), b-pipe, Msd ignition, Stock carbs, 13-17 cutback, Lightened flywheel, UMI pole and steering, footholds...

So my question is, I am debating on what to do to my motor. I was thinking about just getting it freestyle ported but then I got to thinking maybe to bigger. So now I am looking at going with a 770cc wamiltons with freestyle porting and also switching to an ADA head. So I am wondering if it is worth my money to go that big? I would also be running the stock carbs through next summer as I don't have the funds to upgrade those also. I have just been debating on what to do for a couple weeks now and need some help.

Thanks!!

Depends on your skill level. I tell people not to let there motor pass up there skill level.

If you bore big get bigger carbs.

Yes on the ADA head.

very good advise. I've been adding a little more every year... grow your motor with your skills.

for the money, i think having your oem 701 cylinder ported is the best way to go. you'll notice the difference, and can also run your oem carbs.

get an ada head with 35cc domes (185psi) you'll notice that as well.

If u want to get out cheap, call Paul Lehr for some 701 freestyle porting.
With his setup u can use stk ignition and stk carbs. He will port cylinders,
match exhaust manifold to head pipe, bore nozzle, lighten flywheel for somewhere in the 600.00 range!!! It will be night and day diff from what u have now.

If u want to go BIG, well, I have been researching this to the end of the world for the last 2 months. Only advice I can give is-call all the engine builders 3 times each and see how accessible they are. The reason I say that is, u r gonna need tech support after u get a new engine, if u can't get the guy on the phone, then what good is the new engine.

FYI
Matched exhaust manifold = no lifetime warranty.

I wouldn't worry about bigger carbs just yet. There are a few bigbore setups with 38mm carbs that hit like a muther. Gump had a 760 with 38mm carbs a couple years ago and it hi so hard it was hard to stay on.

If thats your ski in the avatar then i would worry about getting an aftermarket hood first; it'll save some weight and you'll be lower. In my opinion, don't worry about a big motor until you are ready to try flatwater backy's. The setup you have is enough to get you doing everything you need to do on your ski. You'll have a little less power then the next guy but you'll also be getting your skill level way up by keeping your motor, because you'll be doing the work not the motor. Once you get good enough where you can ride away from a flatwater roll and other stuff then worry about your motor. That way when you go for a big motor you will just be critiquing your skills and not try to learn them while hanging onto big power.

Yeah, that is my ski in the avatar. I am lowering it this winter as well as re-inforcing the hull. I know the BB is out of my skill level, but I just found a good deal on a 770 setup and that is why I am leaning on going for it. I was just going to port my cylinders this winter, but I look at, like do I want to spend the money on that and then do a BB next winter. Or just save the port money and do a BB now?

Maybe I will just pick it up and not install it this winter and wait until next when my skill level will be higher?

save the money and bank it incase you break something on your ski. you never know what could happen, i never expected to have to buy two driveshafts(1st snapped,2ndstripped) and a midshaft this summer (result of a busted hull insert=motor out of alignment), a stator, and i blew a motor at the end of the season.
