Super Jet Looking for My First Stand Up

I have been lurking for a while, and thought it was about time I made my first post.

I have been riding a waveraider for a while and want to start riding a stand up, mostly free ride. After reading a bunch of posts, it seems like a Superjet is the way to go.

Currently I can only afford a 650 square nose. Will I regret not waiting and saving up to get a round nose. Will I be able use the SJ to learn how to ride?

Not at all, but it doesn't serve a 'free-style' use. It's primarily for my GF and my cousins who like to ride but don't enjoy riding on the Superfreak. It's kind of a recreation only boat cause it has about 0% balls.

I had a 701 in a Round nose with a few other mods and loved it for freestyle (absent any back-flips of course). But it would have been just as fun as a square nose since they're pretty much the same thing.

The only thing that really matters is condition. I'd take a good clean 650 starter ski over a beat RN. The good condition ski can be resold later for minimal loss, but the beater ski will always cost money and you will have lest ride time. Sometime being on the water with less power is more valuable than holding a wrench over a fancy POS.

My 1st ski was a 650sx for $800. Given the chance to go back, I'd spend more money on a better ski. I had a great time on the 650sx, but it was always broken. My biggest regret with that purchase was the condition of the ski and that it frequently broke, not the ski itself. It may not have been a superjet, but it was a lot of fun. The most important thing was it lead to me meeting other riders and finding this forum. I would not discourage anyone from starting on a 650sx, other than they are usually old and worn. Condition condition condition. Make sure whatever you buy wont break.

A stock 650 square nose yanks my fat ass out of the water just fine. If you're just starting out you'll be fine for a while.

I would, it'll take more than $500 to get a 650 to 701 hp and it's a better starting point. A 650 or a 701 isn't going to lose much value unless you trash it so if you go to upgrade later you can sell it for pretty close to what you paid.

with all mods being the same on the two skis, would you spend the extra 500 dollars on a 700?

Not if it's a 61x.

Depends on the kind of work you want to do and how much money you have. When I was in college, I would have bought the 650, then found a waveraider for $500, made the swap and parted out the raider.

I've had multiple skis but never kept one for more then a month until I found a Sj. It's a 92 with a stock 650 I've rode it all summer and loved it. My opinion it would depend on your budget and what area your in. I've already got a 61x 701 motor waiting to install over winter. I would do it now but plan to redo all fuel, water lines, carb rebuild, paint, turf etc. If you find a deal on something I'd buy it reguardless of 650 or 701. As mentioned before you could swap motors pretty easily and put the 650 in a sit down

Thanks for all the advice. I just purchased, what I believe is a very clean, 650 square nose for a very reasonable price. After reading the posts, I came to the conclusion that condition is most important, and I should get what I can afford. I will see how I enjoy the sport and if I fall in love with it and become obsessed, I can mod, trade up, or just ride.

Can't wait for the weekend, so my son can make a fool of himself falling off trying to stand up.
