FX-1 Limp FX1, need help with diagnosis

Hey all new hear and trying to resurrect my youth. I have a 95 FX1 that I bought about 6 years back. I ran it stock for 2 years then life got real busy and the ski sat for 4 years. Before getting back on the water I put a Coffman Sizzler pipe on.

Also installed a bilge and have the hot lead running to the fuse in the CDI box.

I got it all hooked up and noticed I neglected to put a barb into the new Coffman Exhaust manifold so I had nowhere to run my water into the ski. So new barb in and we are all good to go again. Ski fired up and reved just fine on land and with flush kit hooked up to it. Pisser is pissing and even the little water tube coming from the stock head on the left was pissing water (now blocked off, is this correct?)

So I dropped it in the water today and I couldn't get past about 5mph would rev up to a certain rpm then it was like it was toped out and just kept bouncing off the low rev. Took my hood off and tried to run it and it came alive for one quick 50yd run. So I thought cool, put the hood back on and then same issue. Could not even get up on plane. Head also seemed to be running hot. Pipe Temp seems fine. Tried running with hood off again and no luck, tried messing with the carb setting a little each way and it seemed to have no affect on the performance getting past that rev point.

I'm not sure if I should clean/rebuild the carb after sitting for so many years. If the bilge did something. If there is an overheat sensor that trips. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I know there are a lot of smart minds that are very in tune with the skis so hopefully my description helps.

GASKETS FOR CHAMP BRAP!
I'd for sure take the carb off and take it apart and inspect it and clean it. Take the jets out and blow through them with carb cleaner and compressed air. Take the needle and seat out too, it could be sticking and not popping off correctly. Also check all your lines and filters for debris or decay and get some new fuel if you havent already.

You may need a new needle and seat along with a carb rebuild kit. After a carb sits a long time it can get gummed up and the jets can get partially clogged. Also the diaphragms can get hard and not work properly.

Even with the new pipe on it should still run correctly(if it did before), just may need some adjustments or a little re-jetting.

thank you

I'll start there and report back. There is a shop nearby with a testing tank so I might take it down there to get it dialed in. I'll report back.

I would go ahead and replace all your fuel lines, clean your tank as well.

The gas has undbubtedly turned to gel/ varnish over 4 years. If you clean the carb etc and do the other service related items mentioned above it won't stop more junk from loosening up and causing you further issues. Spend the time now and save yourself future hassle.

I did the same thing to my ski... its not very hard.

Update is I've had no time because of my day job. So I threw it over to a local shop. They rebuilt the carb but have had little progress on tunning as it is a stock carb and I put a Coffman Sizzler pipe on there. I got some specs from SUPERTUNE through the search tool. He recommended a 120 low and 140 high for a stock 701 with single 44sbn. Does this sound about right. I gotta get this thing running I'm craving a ride so bad!

Carb dialed in, now after engine is warm it hits rev limiter until it sits a while and cools off again. Also have two torn motor mounts.

All dialed in. Went for a ride finally after a 4 year hiatus... Too freeking long! Anyway ran well for about 3 hours then my starter relay went out. It's good to be back though. Installed a second pisser last minute with some home depot parts, problem is pisser wend straight out and I burned the crap out of my calf when doing a few hood tricks.

New Relay back in
Replaced 2 motor mounts
disconnected temp sensor
Ordered new pisser exit nozzle
Ordered ADA Head w/35cc domes (install this winter)
Ordered SJ pump for conversion (install this winter)
Excited to ride again this weekend

thanks for the help
