Installing Factory Pipe Manifold on Superjet 701?

So you run the first two top center bolts in until no threads are showing,
then slide the manifold up under the bolts. Then what? Just leave them that
way? No wrench I have will fit in there to give them proper turns to
tighten them up much further, as the manifold is in the way.

Is that by design? The manifold just held in place by the other six bolts?
From the FP directions, it sounds that way.

What have the rest of you done?

You need to modify a 12 mm open end wrench. Grind on the outsides of the two sides to make them skinnier.
You can tighten them that way.

I forgot!
yeah make the wrench, i also had to shorten those two bolts or put an extra washer on them to tighten against the mani before the bolt bottoms out.

yea i remember having to cut my bolts down some so they wouldnt bottom out

i also had to grind down the 12mm wrench to get those tighter

Thanks for the replies, guys.

Just wanted to make sure I wasn't running into some unique
problems here. I've talked to many people with these pipes, but
hadn't heard anyone mention what a pain in the butt installing
the manifold was.

Just grind the manifold a little. It doesn't take much, and then you don't have to weaken your wrench, or have a "special" wrench just for 2 manifold bolts.

if you use a cheap ass chinese wrench it fits right in there...

i used one out of one of those 175 tools in one kit and it worked great...till i cracked the wrench in half tightening them up.

I'll customize a wrench....rather grind on a $3 wrench from Odd Lots
vs. grinding a component of a $700 pipe!

the wrench that comes in all yamaha tool kits works great, it is real thin. I use a modified craftsman, also, you can use a dremal to clearance the manifold a little bit to help.

This sucks! Got mine on yesterday, all was mint except for the last bolt that would not go in any further, 1 thread remeianed showing. Impossible. I didn't know it could bottom out. Top centre right bolt, PITA! Top left bolt snugged in nicely. Doesn't make sense.

Now I have to pull the whole thing off, toss in a washer and make it happen. Seriously, what a bitch, and this is the best design going?

Keep in mind this was my first B pipe install, manifold went on in 10 minutes minus the wrench grinding and trying to reef the last bolt in.

Manifold seems stupid tight, I don't even think I have to bury that last thread, there is no way there is going to be an exhaust leak, and I used a liberal amount of gasekt sealer. I may just leave it on second thought.

If you tightened all the other bolts before that last one, chances are that it's simply stuck to the manifold.
It's is mandatory to tighten those two center bolts before any of the others.

Its possible, I tightened the top 2 center bolts first but not all the way, than I went to spin the last few threads and it froze. I guess I have to reef them in all the way first. Makes sense.

It's hard to describe, but if you look at where they sit in the manifold, you'll notice that it's possible for the manifold to pinch the bolt head if the other bolts are tightened first.
That said - stock length bolts are too long for the top two center bolts. They must be shortened.

I think its just too long of a bolt. I can get the wrench head in and under the bolt, initially it was pinching the bolt so I get what your saying, I just powered through it and gouged the manifold a bit.

I'll grind the bolt down and re apply with the proper tightening sequence.

Its funny, all the B pipe threads I read over time, and I finally get a B pipe for $400 used, I don't ever recall seeing a post that the stock bolts are too long. I guess its common sense as the OEM manifold is thicker but I don't have an OEM manifold on hand so who would of thunk?
