I have an opportunity to buy an 800 sxr that was winterized over a year ago and has been sitting in the owner's garage since.
What do I have to do before starting/running it?

well since you did not winterize it, who knows what he did.

Id start with some fresh gas and oil, and dump the old crap in the mowers.
new plugs never hurt. and check compression.

but you really dont need to de-winterize them.

Check/charge battery.
Before you put new plugs in, pull the old plugs, put a rag over the head and turn it over for 15 seconds or so to blow any excess fogging oil out. Put the old plugs back in. I wouldn't waste new plugs until you burned all the fogging oil off after it has been run a bit.

Make sure the previous owner didn't stuff rags or whatnot in the exhaust or pump to try to keep critters out.

find out if he put antifreeze in when he stored the ski, otherwise if he left water in there something may have freezed and crack a hose somewhere....

I agree with you, Gonorrhea but you don't know how much water has accumulated in the gas.

Check the cooling lines are all attached. Sometimes when ppl winterize they pull a line and fill antifreeze in the engine/exhaust. Otherwise that thing should be ready to go with a good battery.
