A lot people start with an even cut ride plate and then D cut it.... That's what I did on my 750 until I chopped an inch or so off the back of the hull. Then it was pretty much flush.

cut flush so its even and then D cut the MF'er. No point to D-cut if its hanging out the back 3 inches. That is just asking for a good wound

alot of how the ride plate will affect your riding will depend on your weight, where your footholds are placed , if you riding in footholds or stagger stance , surf or flatwater .
if you start flush you can always cut the d plate in it but you cannot go back .
