Saw something about chopping a couch driveshaft to fit a sj. Can this be done and which shaft?

It can be done, but not something you should do yourself. Your best bet would be to send @JetManiac your core driveshaft and buy a proper length driveshaft from him.

I only ask because there are some in the for sale being advertised as "heavy duty" and cut from longer shafts. I've got a pile of shafts just none for a sj and I need one. Do the splines get cut back in after shortening?

The heavy duty shafts are couch shafts that have been cut down and rewelded to SJ length. Stock SJ driveshafts are tapered, and couch shafts are not, which is why they call them heavy duty.
If you've got a pile of shafts, just get in contact with JetManiac and work something out with him. That way, you have his amazing service and quality parts and dont have to worry about a homemade driveshaft.
