air compressor and tools

Ok,

Well with Butti's new shop up and running within the next day or so...It's time for Idok to re-outfit his garage.....

I have been storing all his and motosurfers crap now for about the past year or so, and very soon I will be losing my compressor, air tools and some other key items.....

Wondering what kind/size compressors everyone is using.......

Im going oil bathed with about a 30 gallon tank.........probalby this one here:

http://www.homedepot.com/prel80/HDUS/EN_US/diy_main/pg_diy.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@1653301418.1153939052@@@@&BV_EngineID=cccjaddigmdikjicgelceffdfgidgmm.0&CNTTYPE=PROD_META&CNTKEY=misc/searchResults.jsp&MID=9876&N=2984+3966&pos=n24

now I need some rec's on some air tools......Not going to buy snap on...I dont make my living with this stuff, just use it occaisionally.....

ebay?
husky from depot?
harbor freight???

thinking Ill need a 3/8" impact, air saw, grinder..........maybe a 1/4 ratchet????

lmk what y'all think......

stay away from harbor freight (central pneumatic) airtools. its all garbage built in china that usually lasts for about 10 or so uses..

I recently went through the same debate. After comparing the best that Sears had to offer, Home Depot & Lowes, I bought the biggest Lowes had (Kobalt). It has 13.3cfm @ 90psi, 60 Gal and heavy cast iron cylinders. This is pretty quiet for how big it is. It cost me a little more than I was going to spend but after using this with a pressure-fed sand blaster it more than keeps up. I ran and wired 8/3 with a 50amp breaker from the main (220v).

I know you already know this but those oil-less compressors with a so called rated 8hp and 175psi are such crap. Besides, they are sooo damn loud.

ive got a half inch husky impact wrench was about $69 or so I think, its cool.

the compressor sounds like a good one, oil bath, belt drive, try and wire it for 220 if you can, it is more effecient.

dont knock yourself out on the numbers, you can only make about 2.5HP from a 20 amp 120 volt circuit.

the motors are rated as BS.

half inch impact.

Die grinder ( straigt and right angle) ZILLIONS on uses, polish, cut off wheels, grind with carbide bit...
cheap tools too.

IM lazy, I like my air powered grease gun, you can hold a beer and grease your car/truck/trailer all at the same time.. haha

3/8 ratchet, I use mine alot, again, a lazy mans freind.

I bought the biggest pro model sears had on wheels. (i didn't have a garage at the time) it's nice and recovers quickly. it's pretty quiet. the only propblem I had with it is it can't keep up with a die grinder. So I have to work and wait.

my air tools:
1/2 impact
3/8 impact
3/8 butterfly impact
3/8 ratchet
1/4 ratchet
die grinder, angled and straight - the angled one gets used the most
air chisel
inline sander
jitterbug sander

I need a grinder and a RO sander - other than that, I think I got everythign I need.

My dad used to work for Snap-on, so my tools are about 1/2 snap-on (that I got from him) and 1/2 Central Pneumatic (from HF, that I had to buy) I haven't had any problems with the HF tools - but if I go to replace them now, I would probaly buy a "better" brand.

i have a 60 gal (i think) sears oil-less compressor. what a mistake. i had no idea itd be so damn loud. its been very dependable but it sounds like a neighborhood transformer is shorting internally. very unpleasant sound.

I say check eBay for some used tools. I bought a 'lot' of air tools in one auction. DA sander, air ratchet, impact, spray gun, chisel, rotary, etc for C H E A P
All work great and have lasted great so far.

Good looking out Caker.
Idok- Definitily get a unit that is oil bathed and has seperate motor and pump. Oilless & direct-drive units are crap. I am a distributor of Champion compressors. You can check out championpneumatic.com and look at there air online units. They are very similar to the unit you are looking at. I could check into prices for you but I think shipping may kill the price. Too bad your not local or I'd hook you up with a nice used one.
As for air tools you really can't beat the IR stuff for the money. I know Lowes sell it up here. Stay away from Harbor Freight it's all junk.
If you need any info hit me with a pm

the compressor Ive been looking at:

26 gallon, vertical, oil bathed, 5 peak HP.....its a little better than what Ive been using all along, so figure I wont miss anything...they want loike 370 for it, and I have a 10% off depot coupon....

they also have:
60 gallon vert, oil bathed, 7 peak but that ones for 220....this one is only like 20 bucks more!!!!!!

my boyz all tell me that the 26/110 will be sufficient......Imjust having trouble with the bigger compressor for same money thing....I guess I just hav to decide how much space I want to give up......My "shop" is a 2 car garage that I do NOT park vehicles in....

here's a pic of each...

the smaller one should do fine for grinders etc - provided you have at least the minimum CFM

but for $20 more - I would get the big unit. the shop footprint on each looks to be about the same.

I have a 26 gallon Husky vertical compressor. Works great. I had to put it on its own 20 amp breaker. I've never had any problems with it. If you're gonna be using die grinders/sanders alot you need a bigger tank though. Most of my air tools are the Husky brand also. Keep'em oiled and you won't have any problems.

because as you get to larger motors, 220V is more energy efficient, the motor doesn't have to work as hard - therefore it will last longer...and cost less to run it.
