I have an old bultaco. I rode it a bit before I broke my leg and it has sat ever since. Even if it sat for a month before this it was almost impossible to start. it involved pressurizing the fuel tank (blowing into the vent on top) and lots of cranking on the kick starter. what do I need to do to get this thing running and starting easier?

check the fuel line from the tank (inculding petcock) to the carb, sounds like varnish is starting to build up. You may even want to clean the fuel passages and jets in the carb.

I pulled out my bultaco today. I pulled the carb apart and there was varnish all inside the thing. I scraped it out the best I could but I ran out of carb cleaner so I need to give it another go, but I went ahead and put it back together. I was trying to get gas down to the carb but it seemed like it was totally close up, no gas was getting in there. I have a little filter between the carb and the gas tank. When I take the hose apart gas will start to drip from the tank but when I stick it back on the drip stops. I can even hear the gas tank bubbling when I stick the line back on the filter so no air is getting through the carb at all. is that normal? I would think that some gas/air would be able to get though.

well i whipped out my rhinosausage a week and a half ago.

isnt bultaco something you order from taco bell?

"try the new, cheezydrippy bultaco, at your participating taco bell locations."

the gas out of the tank is running ok.

tank-----gas shut off valve------fuel filter-----carb

--- is representing fuel line. the carb seems to be pressurized.

yes there should be a screen in the valve at the tank....

I think you just need to fully clean out the carb and it will probably work out better for ya.

Sorry I thought you meant there was little flow from the tank. Yes there should be a vent from the bowl. Sounds like it may be clogged or your needle and seat are stuck? What type of carb is on it?

If fuel will not flow freely from the tank with the hose disconnected from the carb and the tank is vented then the petcock or screen in the tank is varnished up or clogged with rust. If I were you I would take any rubber parts off of the carb and buy yourself one of those gallon cans of Chem Dip at the local autozone. Dip the carb for a few hours and then make sure all of the circuits are free flowing by using aerosol carb cleaner & air. Something that old is bound to have lots of rust from the steel tank and varnish from the old gas. Get her cleaned out and it should run as good as possible for an old piece of spanish iron like that.
