650/X-2 650sx no start, weak spark?

I just bought an 89 650sx. Took it out to the lake for it's maiden voyage, rode it hard for about 2 hours, then I fell, tipped it sideways and it died. I hit the starter and it would kinda start, sputter and run crappy. Choke had no effect. Then it stopped running at all. Starter cranks good, but no start. I poured fuel down the carb, still nothing. So I'm thinking electrical issue. I shortened the plugs wires 1/4 inch, still nothing. When I brought it home from the lake, it had no spark. Today when i tried it, it had a weak spark, so I'm thinking the stator? Motor is stock besides pipe, and both cylinders have 152psi of compression. I wanna get back on the water before summer is completely over!

You need to check the AC voltage coming out of the source coil, should be around 60-65 VAC, don't assume anything is dead until you know what voltage it is putting out.

Terry is right, another area of problems is the voltage regulator or rectifier, just fixed a wierd issue on mine by swapping in a good one.

think I found my issue... there are some magnet chucks behind my stator cover, and I'm pretty sure they are supposed to be there. hah thanks for the help fellas I'll let you know when I fix it for sure.

ok just a follow up. One of the 2 screws that hold the stator in came loose, and did a number on the magnets on the flywheel. picked up a new one day, putting the engine back in as we speak.
