650 coil/spark plug wire replacement

I have an 89 X2 with a 650, I did a salt water test the other night and found out my spark plug wires are bad. I was curious if i was able to swap out just the spark plug wires or should i just get a stock replacement? Are there any interchangable coils within other models or any upgraded kind that anyone recommends. the coil is not bad, just the spark plug wires.

So far i have pulled the whole assembly out. There are pics to make it more understandable. The spark plug wires go into the coil and is sealed in. I was thinking about diggin out the wires and then sealing them back up with some gorilla glue or something of that sort. Is that a good idea?

You could get an Arieltek coil, they're cheap but they work. I have one on my ski and it seems to be ok. WSM used to have them, not sure if they still do. It was the same thing just sold from WSM. If you decided to remove those leads, show pics of doing it and what the inside of the coil looks like. I'm wondering if they use the threaded posts in there or if it's actually a hard wired wiring set-up. Here's a link for Arieltek to the Kawi coils.

WSM? Westmarine?

I will definatly document it if i decide to dig out. if i do dig it out and they happen to be the threaded posts, when i purchase new wires do they have to be any specific type? Marine grade or regular style? sorry never done this before.

That's good to know chriselmore_1, I'll keep that one in mind. If it were me replacing them I would pick up some good silicone leads. The NGK racing leads look nice and are silicone, but I'm sure there is better than that. I found some amazing looking leads on a Toyota 4-Runner at the scrap yard lol. They were the nicest looking things on that engine so I "borrowed" them :theyareontome: If they are changeable, then I plan on doing it with mine too. I don't think WSM is West Marine, I think they're a subsidiary company of Wiseco. Oh and I know the plug caps are removable on the stock coil, the Arieltek ones aren't unless you rip them off, and they're nasty to rip off of those leads.

^^ that does not look promising....what do you recommend crab?
You can get the wire out with the tool and replace it, pic shows the spike inside the plastic tubes (cut open for clarity) but don't bother trying to take one appart. Even if you do this there is no guarantee the cdi is still any good, most are 20 years old and just shot. hot products might still have some new ones.

Hey camaro,
Im not sure on the tool. This is an older thread I ended up sending my whole CDI to a member on here, forgot his name, and he sent me a replacement. Worked great and was already upgraded to newer wires with protection.
Good luck.
-The guy does a lot of the spark plug swaps for people....located on the east coast.....sorry but thats all i can remember at the moment.
