300/440/550 300 sx

a buddy i ride with picked up a very good looking 300 sx today for cheap. question is, it has a oil plug with a dip stick attached to it behind the motor by the drive shaft. theres oil down in there. is it suppose to be there and whats it for? it also has this big plastic square looking box attached to the intake by a hose. never seen anything like this before but this is the first 300 any of us has ever fooled with. any input appreciated.

As the resident 300sx expert I will field this one.The oil dipstick is for checking the oil level for the starter clutch. As far as the oil goes anything from 5w30 to 20w50 motor oil will work fine. The 300 uses a motorcycle style starter clutch and rquires an oil bath to operate properly. It also has a drain bolt located at the bottom for draining the oil out.The box attached to the intake is a boost bottle like the ones used on the dirt bikes and atv's and adds bottom end to the powerband,it stores part of the intake charge and releases it later.
