650/X-2 1987 Kawasaki 650SX..NEED HELP PLEASE!!!

I have a 1987 Kawasaki 650SX that is currently not running, the ski had a tune-up last season and has been sitting through the winter and hasn't been ran this season and now it won't start. when I try to start it up it just makes a "Click" sound and doesn't turn over or crank up. I was thinking it was a bad battery, and i am going to try and charge the battery once i get a charger. I haven't had time to mess with it but I honestly have no idea what could be wrong with it. Can anyone help me and let me know if they think sounds like a battery problem or something else?

Any help or opinion is much appreciated

Thank you

okay i'm going to thread jack this. My x-2 had a very very weak crank and it eventually wouldn't crank at all. It has a brand new bendix and battery. I'm guessing either starter or bad/ loose connections, but not sure. Any advise on where to start? I also noticed that the connections to the battery were getting warm.

If they are getting warm or hot, you probably have a bad connection causing higher then normal resistance causing heat. I would get a meter and ohm out the wires that are getting hot. Clean up connections also. This was happening to my SJ and a 550 due to the ends of the postive cable having corrosion.

Very much sounds like a loose connection or tired battery. Same thing happened to my spare X2 on the water last week. A buddy was riding and then he started swimming in with it. He said it was just "clicking" and wouldn't start. I opened the hood and the negative terminal had vibrated loose.

What kind of battery do you have? If it sat for awhile and you didn't have a tender on it the battery could be done. I would try a battery that you know is good first.

More than likely the starter solenoid is on the way out, jump across the two starter solenoids terminals and see if it cranks over or not

Bypass the starter cylinoid. If it doesn't turn over, it's the battery or the starter. The best way to rule out the battery is to try it with one you know it is good. To test the starter, take it off and jump it on the bench. Just be careful. All of the preceeding can cause sparks and explosions. Make sure there is no gas and test in a well ventilated area. The proper way to test is with volt/ohm meters.

I've had more than my fair share of starter and battery issues. First step is to jump the relay by putting a screwdriver across the terminals. If you turn, replace the relay. Second step is to make sure the battery is good by jumping from a known good battery. If you turn, replace the battery. Third step is to put 12v directly to the starter, bypassing all the cables, from a known good battery. If you turn, replace the cables. If you still dont turn, replace the starter. Done.

Usually if its rusted on the outside its found its way inside as well, you can actually pull those apart and rebuild them if you unsolder the wires carefully though.

Rust or no rust... why replace it if it has not failed? I'd rather focus on the truly broken parts. But thats just me - I'm not one of those guys who keeps things pretty. These, to me, are purely functional. No time or money for vanity.

It's my girls ski, and it's an inexpensive part to replace. I'd rather fix it now then later. I hate not seeing her able to ride when mine is running good. Much rather fix it now

Try tuning the motor by hand, if the pump is swollen or the motor is frozen nothing gonna happen...
