That thing just had a little clearance issue between the piston and cylinder. It's not like you had chunks breaking off.
Here's what my last piston looked like.

That sounds like a b-pipe is a bad thing.
If you can swing it that grab a b-pipe for sure.
Those pro-tec pipes sell for about $200, are a cheaper way to go but not necessarily the better way.
Since the tray is opened up, why not add a one-way valve in that drain tube ?
You could still leave the cap on but when you uncork it the valve will be there for you.
P.S. I despise bilge pumps.
Are you sure it's fuel related and not the salt demon attacking your electrical system ?? Quite common for fresh water riders on vacation in FL.
Try some dielectric grease in your plug boots and your start/stop switch plugs. Unscrew the cap on your electric box and see if it's all dry in...
