I had the same fears when I first started to play with resins. I must say that my hull has survived quite well and all the places that I cut and reglassed still look good. I recently busted off the nose (again), my repair stayed intact but the hull broke further back.

Don't know about welding but you could drill through both shafts and through-bolt them. If they are trashed anyway, why not experiment. How about epoxy instead of grease ?
