Yep... Evinrude (OMC) made an "E-tech" motor that was lighter, produced more power, and was cleaner burning thats it's 4T counterparts.

run a wire coat hanger down the boot till you can grab it from the bottom, then tape the end of the wire to the hanger still exposed at the top and yank it through.
DONE!

I think you are right. But I chalk that up to most people not knowing exactly what they are trying to do. this is all about timing and style. if eiter one isnt just right it just looks like somebody doing a turn on a wave.
It's much more than "throwing spray" at a wave.
