EDIT: PICTURES AT POST 9!!!!!!!!!

Hi,

Just bought a B2, first time out I think I blew up the engine. No compression in the front cylinder, and with the sparkplug fully screwed in you can see some exhaust coming from the cylinder.

It has a stock milled head. Did I stick a piston or just blow up the oring? I'm really having 0 luck with all my skis and boats this summer...90 650sx electrical problems, 06 SJ with fuel problems, 17' Hydrasports with a dead 130hp Yamy, 96 B2 with a blown motor I think :(

Thanks,
Woody

yeah it has about 70psi. it comes im assuming around the threads of the spark plug. this b2 has a protec exhaust, ocean pro fa's and a milled head so i'm guessing i cooked the piston, but i didnt know if maybe it was just an oring in there that may have blown that would save me alot of worries

If it sounds like it cranking smoothly, my guess is the head gasket or o-rings. Real cheap to replace and realy easy to see if that's the problem. You won't know for sure until you pull the head though so grab your wrenches.

ok...got around to ripping off my pipe and head and seeing my damages...this is what i've got to show. what are the next steps? Look at the gasket...do u think this is the source of my problems? or am i gonna have to get the cases honed out. these pistons are already 2 o/s (i'm guessing since there is a "50" on the piston)

rag stuff is carbon and unburned oil
looks like the head gasket blew
use only OEM to go back

sorry, missed those on my cheapo monitor
probably have to disassemble to see what all is going on
to the sides of the pistons/rings
will need new gaskets, hone and rings at best

Look at the pic with both pistons...notice how the right piston has no carbon buildup on the center (aka piston wash)? That piston is super clean because the gasket blew on that side, bits of water were getting into the chamber, and the cylinder and piston were basically steam cleaned. The piston wash on the other cylinder looks good though.

The streaks on the cylinder walls don't look bad from the pictures. I don't know how deep they are though. Unless they look really deep, I would reassemble it personally and continue running it until winter at least. If you change the head gasket and the compression is still low you will have to go with the option below.

The better option is pull the cylinder off and make sure the pistons are in decent shape. If they are, just buy new rings, rent a hone from autozone, hone the cylinder, put the new rings in, and be good for a while. It's not difficult but much more involved.

ok...i'm a noob at these motors...

i've never actually disassembled my cases. can i do this with the motor in the ski or do i have to pull it out? i know about the base gasket in there...just didn't know where the screws to disassemble the cases are. can a decent amateur mechanic do it or do i leave it to the pro? what are my steps?

also...i'm looking to get the oem gasket...best to get it from RIVA OEM parts finder or do they sell them cheaper somewhere else?

just replace the pistons. the one with the blown headgasket is toast. its a waist of time to bolt a new gasket on the cylinder. fix it 1 time. go back to stock and it will run like mine all day every day. (you see what i put mine through lol) 2 new pistons top end gasket kit. get .5s that cylinder will clean up with a pass odf the hone.
