300/440/550 New 550 Owner... Carb Help?

I've got a beater 550 (I think it's an '85) that I picked up over the winter to learn to ride on. Dipped it for the first time yesterday... got the idle adjusted and it fired right up. Runs fine at low RPMs but bogs down when I get on the throttle (and since I'm a fat bastard... gonna need that power!) Anyone know what the "stock" high/low screw settings should be?

Any way to run this thing out of the water?

Thanks

The low speed should be out 1 and the high speed should be out 5/8. You can put a hose on it and run it out of water, but that won't tell you much, because the pumpwill not be under a load. It will run totally differant on the hose and on the water. Check the settings on your carb, If that does not fix it I would look at rebuilding the carb. Kit should cost between 20 and 30 bucks, and is very simple to do. Make sure you clean everything real good while you have it apart. Spray cleaner through every orifice, and you should be up and running in no time.

if your careful enough, and can take it apart and not break any of the gaskets or anything you can get away with not needing a rebuild kit.

if there not all brittle and nasty and leaking gas tho

what we did with my 550 is put it in our pool (mom was at work of course) put it up against the wall and adjust it like that and have it adjusted before u get out to the water.. or tie off the rear to the dock, don't turn the screws to much i find the older 550's to be very temperamental.. and the carb rebuilt kit was $17. at the local shop in Vegas for us

So..... Update?

Did you get the problem fixed?

I took the carb apart and cleaned it and it seemed to run really well for a couple of weeks until we tried to drag it behind the boat. Nose went down and it basically submerged the entire thing. The starter had enough juice to pump out the engine and after I pulled the plug and let it dry out it fired up... but won't run with any power since then. I need a source for the carb rebuild kit.... what else could be wrong?
