gas tank vent question

rn suerjet - putting ski back togther and i was wondering what and how the 2 gas tank vents worked-one line goes to a water seperator next to the b pipe? and the other gets tucked somewhere , not sure where-
do i need all that? one had a small plastic bulb on the end. are there any options to clean it up- could i just use a couple of short hoses like a dirt bike gas cap? do i need the water seporator even though im not sure why on a vent i would need it. does the other hose sit on the hull bottom or does it need to be held up?

You don't need the water separator.
Just run a short piece of hose with the check valve on it and you are done.

Here's a picture of mine but you don't even need that much hose.

cool- thanks-so i can just remove the entire plastic seperator screwed to the fiberglas - why would they ever need something that big for a vent?
did u just tuck the 2 hoses up high near the exhaust?

i c u have 2 in line fuel filters also- did u remove the stock one mounterd on the right side?

On my tank (from left to right) 2 fuel lines as I run dual carbs, fuel tank vent, return fuel line.

The vent is just a short piece of hose, check valve and another short piece of hose that dangles down by the battery.
You don't need that second piece of hose, I just have it there in case I need it for some emergency repairs.

nice lookn motor by the way- im confused now- arent they 2 vent lines? how is one of the a return fuel line, where does it come from? the 2 out of the cap are res and on- the other 2 that come of the top of the tank are vents i thought

The return fuel lines connects your carb return line to the tank.

What carb/carbs combo are you running ?

stock dual carbs, and i have the same u do on top 2 coming out of the cap(res and on) and 2 that attach directly to the tank which i thougt were both vents-1 is going to the water seperator which i n ever understood and the other just hung near the baterry- i planned on removing water seprator and just letting both hoses float in hull for vents

The return fuel lines connects your carb return line to the tank.

See that one ?

You need your return line hooked up or you'll have a bunch of fuel in your bilge.

Why would we want to waste time with that useless setup ?
The separator does absolutely nothing other than fill up with water.

With the one way it only lets air into the tank. Not fumes out into the hull. It is a nice redundant safety but I have had more issue with water in the fuel actually using the seperator...go figure.

In a perfect world they work great, most remove them or at least leave the drain open so water can get out and not go to the tank.

soooooo- the best set up would be to elim water seperator and just run the vent line up the pole or in the hood. do i still need a check valve so air goes into tank and none out? do i need one on the fuel return line also

That would be the best way if you want to get water in your tank. You need the water separator only when your vent line is going up the pole, and can get water in it. If you cut it off right after the one way valve, you don't need the separator. If you still for some reason want to run it up the pole, use the separator but leave the dump valve open so the water just falls into the hull.
