Router: Which One

I need a router for a small home network for running about four computers.... What's the best router for the money???

I have a POS that barely works and im getting tired of it....just need some advice!

not sure of the model number off the top of my head, but i heard they are making a version of the DIR-655 i love and recommend that doesnt have all the fancy QOS and other stuff a lot of people probably wont use.. i think i read it was like $109ish

thats what'd i'd recommend. i'm very happy with my dir-655 if you want something with all the bells and whistles on it.

Are you actually networking the pc's or just getting them online?

yeah getting them online for internet purposes. if i run internet on the computers simultaneously the internet doesnt work so i just need a router that can handle it i guess...

In that case, most will do the job. I use a Linksys WRT54G at home, it gets the job done. Faster won't really matter in your case since you're not worried about networking them to each other, just to the web. 54g is more than enough for 10mbps cable which I have. 54g gives more like 20-25mbps speeds where 11b gives 3-5 in real world apps from my experience.

Same one I have I think, can't make it work all the time. I don't think its the router, but it comes off another linksys router next door and gets confused. Something about proxy settings I think.

If you think you have interference, change the channel your router is operating on.

Hard to beat the price if you can wait a few days for shipping. And yes I know it is a Netgear but for general internet access I've had OK luck with them.

Not what you think, we buy hardwire signal from their partial T1, and have tried many things to make it work right, easier to just plug into the wall.

WRT54G with dd-wrt is an awesome combo. other wise if I was buying something new I would get something with N.

darin, i went and bought that router when i was having wireless troubles. im still have the same problem..... the wired computers are fine but the wireless ones are SLOW... even right next to the router.

any chance that it could be the modem? i wouldnt think so since the wired computers are fine :dunno:

how would i go about doing that....i have a d-link router

Log into the router and change it in the configuration.

If you don't know how to do that, then you need to read the instructions and you definitely need to because it tells me you've never set any security on it either.

not *your ip, but your *gateway ip (your router is your gateway), generally speaking it will be whatever your computers IP address, but with a .1 at the last octet instead of whatever ip comes up for your dhcp lease.

easy way to get your ip address:

start->run->cmd.exe->ipconfig

Line you're looking for should start with "IP Address:"


you could also find out specifically which ip address is your gateway/router ip by just doing a "route print" in your dos window. look for the line that has the network and destination address as 0.0.0.0. its typically in the first few lines or the last few lines, depends on your o/s.
