Ending turf@ transom. Sanding turf, how?

I have my turf in for my ski and am about to tear up the stock crap. I think I will only be doing the bottom section this time. I want to add foot holds at some point, but I will wait untill winter for that when I can take my time. I have a few questions before I begin...

How to you terminate the turf at the rear of the ski? I will be using the 25mm underpad all the way to the rear bondline. I will then go over that with some cut diomond turf. Do I cut the underpad flush with the end and just wrap the turf around and trim to a knife edge, or should I continue the turf up under the bondline?

Seems like it would come unglued easily with landings. What about prep? I have read to sand the turf before installation. But I am not crazy about sanding my new hull down untill I get uderway with the footholds. Will the adheasion be enough between the bare tray and turf if left glossy?

How do you sand this underpad? I plan to rertain the stock corner caps at the rear and need to taper this thick underpadding down. I tried a belt sander with 80 grit and it is slow. Seems like a flap wheel on an angle grinder would do a better job, whats the best method?

do not wrap the 25mm padding around the back, leave it flush w/ the rear, then wrap the turf around it, then cut the turf at a 45 degree angle after you make sure it's stuck good. After you cut it at a 45 degree angle sand it w/ 80 grit paper.

prepping - sand the turf and the tray w/ 80-36 grit.... whatever you have. be careful w/ the 25mm padding.

I wrapped my turf all the way down and around. Mine came up by the end of last season but that was only bc the underpad ripped. taper the underpad out and make sure the last half inch of turf is stuck directly to the hull and you wont have any problems. thats how mine is now and its holding up fine. You can also go ever the edge with super glue for extra protection.

Yeah, that what I was planning on doing with the underpadding, flush at the back. I though I was going to wrap it around the edge but that would not work at all. I though I was going to have the underpad flare out at the rear, tappered right to the corner trim and then turf over that, then cap it off with the plastic corners, but this wont be happening.

I got carried away and cut my underpadding in two sections, will the seam be noticable when covered with turf, assuming I butt it up good?

I also think I cut my turf the wrong direction after looking at the other jobs on here. I wouldnt think it wouldn't make a difference in traction but the diamonds are running lengthwise with the ski. Is the molded preferd over the cut? I heard the molded weras better but I won't be wearing shoes while ridding.

One more thing, if I get carried away and turf the sides and caps, what padding thickness is used to fill in the void the stock rail caps leave. I have some of the 8mm now. I dont want to pull those off and see that I cant ride this weekend becasue I am not willing to ghetto turf a new SJ.

i cut the 25mm at a 45deg angle ending at the bow eye..it will stick best like that

you can see where i ended it by the back of the rear strap

the seam will not be noticeable at all... As far as the turf being directional, I have been told it is suppose to be side to side on the tray and lengthwise on the gunwales. Personally I don't notice a difference and no one will look at your boat and gasp.. he he he...

You can use some 8mm padding or just leave the top of the rails w/ no padding... the latter is the most common method.

The picture looks as if the turf actually wraps 180* up underneath the backside of the bondline. Is this what your saying? Or do you end it at the edge and miter/sand the turf to this edge?

Good deal, I guess a random orbital sander would do a better job at cutting the underpad than a belt sander? I will do it the way outlined above. How does the front dash panel come off. I see the four rivets, but is it siliconed to the top deck also?

the best thing to cut the under padding with is a steak knife then hit it with the grinder or sander to fine tune it..it dosnt have to be perfect cause the turf hides the imperfections....those rivits are just holding my old hood straps on...the dash panel is just glued down like normal..i just dont have any knobs on my dash..they arnt being covered by the turf or anything...and you could probably end the under padding closer to the tail but just give yourself a couple inches so the turf has enough stuck to the actual tray before it makes that bend

My superjet didn't have it's rails turfed when I took it out to california to ride, and it didn't look ghetto at all. Besides, you rode your blue blaster (aka:ghetto blaster) with a mismatched hood for a good month...you can't get any more gangster than that :biggrin::biggrin:

the only way to cut that ******** striaght

for the actual turf I use the Olfa Stainless Knife w/ stainless blades... They are the best I have used... Very precise and easy to handle. They work great for vinyl too

Nope, it still has its scars, the painter wanted to take the paint all the way back. Too much hastle, so I just kept the insurance money. The turf is starting to look a little rough though, I have been thinking about giving it a make over this winter. Although I may be polishing my new ski instead:biggrin:
