to keep spammers off. it only has to be replies
There are spammer bots that sign up and start threads, there some that send pm's, and others that do both, and there are just trolls that sign up and send crap out. This is a level of defense against that along with the other things like a valid e-mail, visual captcha, etc.
I'd rather put up with a couple of complaints about it than the multitude of complaints about spam.
