paint gun opinions

I need to find a paint gun. I don't want to spend over 100 bucks. I have a big (50 gallon 220v) compressor if that is an issue. I need a good all round gun that can lay down primer base and clear. What should I look for?


what size fluid tip will I need or will I need different tips for the primer and the paint a clear?


I also need tips on keeping the gun maintained so it lasts a while - cleaning, storing ect.

The home depot (Husky) gravity feed guns work quite well for general applications, I would suggest the low pressure gun I think they are around 100 bucks.

Just clean them good after use and they will last forever.

cheap gun = poor results

if you spend a little more on the gun now, it'll last you alot longer and you'll get better results. it'll also be easy to get replacement parts and differrent sized tips and needles.

But I have painted lots of things with a harbour freight HVLP gun, on sale for about $49

its a clone of a Sata gun, and from what I can tell the parts interchange.

you will get better results with experience and patience and a cheap gun than with out experience, or patience and a $700 binks.

you cant even touch what I would consider a brand name gun for $100

get a cheapy and use it.

I can't justify spending more on a gun. 100 is my limit.

I am looking at teh SHARPE FINEX. from the reviews I have found it seems to be a pretty good gun. Does any one on here use one?

that looks like a nice gun.

look up the specs and see how much volume ( CFM) it requires.

the HVLP guns use ALOT of volume, and like 40 psi max of pressure, it takes a robust compressor to run them.

also, make sure you can get tips for it, and see if the 1.4 ( that it comes with) will spray the primer, sealer, base, and clear coats you plan to use.

IMO buy 2 guns-
one super cheapo Ebay HVLP and one a little better for base&clear, check your local pawn shops, I got a smokin deal on a very nice Sata.

It has a 1.4 tip. it seems like that will be a good size to do both a primer and the bas clear. If not tips are 50 bucks...

Yes...
I actually use the same size tip for paint and primer, the reason I prefer 2 seperate guns is that primer is more likesly to clog or leave residue in the gun.

Suva has a great point.

I actually have a couple of the cheapy hvlp guns.

one for primer and one for base clear.

but mainly because its easier to pick one up and spray, rather than to clean, it then fill and spray.

Here's a real nice beginner paint gun kit with interchangeable tip sizes.

I've had this one for a while now and it has an enormous fan pattern and it's real easy to clean.

The smaller tip 1.3 tip size is great for clearcoats, the medium 1.4 or 1.5 tip size is awesome for basecoats and the larger 1.8 or 2.2 tip sizes are super for high build primers.

Yes, I've always noticed residue left in my gun even after cleaning and backflushing (holding a rag over the tip sealing it off and spraying thinnerthrough, making sure air is coming through the gun into the cup)

I have a nice Mac gun that id sell for $100 it works sweet and painted both of my skis along with a few vehicles w/ it, ive never sprayed primer surfacer through it but i have sprayed just reg, primer/sealent. Its east to control your fluid and air. I just bought a Devilbiss Plus gun thats why i dont need the other.

:beerchug:Ya, for the money the Devilbiss Finishline is a great value. I bought the Finishline II a few years ago and have painted tons of things with it. I like the Devilbiss gravitational paint bags too.
