sxr hood problem

Hey I'm having what is a common problem with the SX-R hood: It pops off EVERY time I do anything underwater. The guy at Blowsion told me this is because the 800 sucks up all the air, creates a vacuum and pulls the hood right against the hull. This leaves room for the latch to 'unlatch.'

I'm leaving Detroit for a 11 day Florida trip next Thrusday so I need to address this fast. I'm trying to avoid moving the hook on the hood so that the latch gives a tighter seal (reposition the hook 1-2mm higher on the hood with someone pushing down on the hood simulating the underwater vacuum) because that would require patching, drilling, etc.

Do you think upgrading to the billet aluminum hood mounts and hood latch will help enough? What about putting some thicker hood sealing? I just put on a bilge and am about to put on hood straps. Thanks guys!

P.S. there is an identical post from last summer...anybody have results from that?

I did hoodstraps on mine-home made-10.00-best money spent on my SXR-well-now roundmans SXR. Im lying-the best money I spent on my SXR was buying a SJ. LOL

seriously tho-hood straps are real quick, easy, and cheap.

I think a lot of guys are having similar issues. It sems Kawi randomly drills the hole location in the hood, so some are supposedly worse than others. I put a pc of vinyl edge guard under the latch and ductaped the whole thing for Daytona. It worked great. I also put hydro turf underneath the hood, on the sides, to keep it from moving from side to side on failed BR attempts, which also helps, but probably will not help on subs. You can redrill as Blowsion says, or use ratchet straps, but some how you need to pre load the hood to keep it tight. No matter what get a set of hood straps ASAP. Let us know what you do and how it works out.

Thanks. I'm going to try and avoid re-drilling like blowsion said. First I'll try the straps with some padding between the hood and the hull, like you said. Any reccommendations on where to ride in FL?

ok so there is plenty of hardware to mount the front of the straps to, but I'm concerned about what to mount the rear to. The kit from blowsion came with two screws w/little washers. Is just drilling a little hole in the fiberglass enough to bear the tension that these straps provide? It seems like I should be screwing into something other than just fiberglass.

you arent cinching them down or using them to support a load. think of them as a seat belt for your hood. you want them snug enough to hold the hood in place but not so much as to overly compress the seal or nullify the hood latch.

Wratchet strap for the win.

My SX hood latch broke. I loosened up the latch, put a wratched strap (home depot) through the bolts, tightened it back down. Then I ran the other end through the pole bracket and back to the wrachet. not only was the hood not going anywhere, but the hood has never had a better seal. It worked quite well.

There's better ways to use a wratchet strap, but it was quick, easy, cheap and effective.

I agree, but it's not a big deal. I did use larger SS washers on the back and sealed it up with 5200 though.
