Squarenose tray question

So I bought a squarenose a few weeks ago, and after 45 minutes of riding it, the 650 in it took a dump.

Now I'm broke because I spent all my money on this POS

So I am restoring the hull, and hopefully at the beginning of next year, I will be all done and I can get an engine. I tried to get one a couple weeks ago, but the funding simply isn't there yet. So I will go ahead and take care of the relatively cheap stuff first.

The main question I have is:

I've been looking at alot of refoam jobs. After tearing the turf off, I noticed there is a raised portion in the tray, about 1/2 way back on the right side. Is this normal? There isn't one on the left side. The raised hump seems sturdy, and doesn't seem to be a repaired section.

Also, I drilled a couple holes around the tray area in various spots, and didn't find signs of water. Should I refoam it anyway? The raised section is what I am concerned about now.

The raised section can be from where the foam under the tray has pulled away from the underside and allowed the tray to flex up. It's a tough call on the refoam. If it looks solid with know signs of being wet, I would hold off until I was ready to install holds and refoam it then. I wanted to wait to do my wife's SJ but when I removed the turf to returf, I found some issues that needed immediate attention. I ended up doing a 90-95% refoam. I'm glad it's done but damn.

Well, I am planning on a total paint job, and footholds this winter. I wanted to go ahead and get the footholds in, and foam if necessary before I did the paint.

The bump feels really solid. I just went out and drilled through the fiberglass carefully above the hump, and it looks like there is blue stuff underneath. Perhaps epoxy?

The shavings that came out were a really faded out blue color. I drilled a hole 2" to the left of the hump, on a flat section, and there is blue stuff under there too.

See, that's the crappy part. I also dont have a camera capable of taking very nice pictures. I doubt it would show up very well.




Is there a possibility that this came from Yamaha like this? Perhaps it wasn't bad enough to junk, so they threw some turf over it and let it slide?

Well, I think I answered my own question. After replying last, I went outside and used a bit by hand to go through the last bit of blue stuff (The epoxy stuff they like to gunk everywhere, if I had to guess) and I hit metal. I think perhaps upon assembly, the threaded nutsert for the front right pump bolt didn't seat correctly, and it sitting on top of the groove it should be in.

Thoughts?

Are the nutserts brass or a silver metal of some type?

Could be, I suppose. I can say that neither of my SN's were like that. Everyone that I have seen without turf had some circular cutout in the center of the try but no epoxy in the tray.

I have to ask, is the turf you are removing the stock stuff?

Nope, it's hydroturf. I can say it's the origninal glass in the tray though, it's even got the sort of cast circular outline in the center.

maybe some one used a longer bolt to put the pump in and didn't realize it.

what happened to the motor?


with the squares the 2 halves of the hull are filled seperatley. so the top is filled then the bottom then they are glued together there should be like a half inch gap between the 2 sides where theres no foam. my ski had water sitting in that gap between the top and bottom deck. if you don't hear any sloshing around inside then i would drill a hole below the exhaust on the right side and or the left side and see if any water drips out after a lil while.

I bet the farm that's what it is!

The motor just bogged out and wouldn't restart. I wasn't even running it WOT because I wasn't used to the SJ hull, and it was a little much for me to handle, coming off of a 650sx.

I got home and checked the compression...30psi in each hole. I then pulled the intake, and low and behold... there is a needle bearing from the crank sitting in the reed cages that has been ripped in two.

Ill bet that the HUMP is one of the peices of the green glue on teh top of the pump/hull mounting box that broke and came loose and moved.
( they use the green goo to hold the metal inserts that you bolt the pump into)

thats exatcly what put a whole in one of my square boats, it came loose, got wedged in a tight spot, and jumping the boat, resulted in cracking the tray over that wad of green goo.

cut them tray open and see.
