Crankshaft Separation

How do you separate the Kawasaki crankshafts on the 440/550 in order to replace the bearings and seals?

Remove the starter, flywheel cover, flywheel and stator coil.

Remove the bedplate and all bolts underneath.

It should come apart easily at this point, if not look for some points that are in the casting to pry with a large screwdriver

Eh....I think the man is asking how to split the crank , not the cases.

You can't do it yourself (not easily, anyway). If it's like any other watercraft crank, it's pressed together.

Correct, I'm trying to split the crank itself. I tried three machine shops in my area and they all said no. I have an arbor press but am wary of messing with it until I know what I'm doing. The crank bearings need to be replaced.

just send it in and get a replacement from SBT or somewhere. Or keep your eyes open for a used one in usable condition.

The short answer is that you can't do it. The pressing is the proverbial easy part. Once back together, it has to be checked for runout and balanced

Yes. You can pay to have yours rebuilt, but I guarantee it will be more expensive than buying another.

Just a heads up no arbor press that I have ever seen will press a crank apart, you need a hydraulic press at least twenty tons to press cranks apart, given the cost of the parts to rebuild a crank it really isn't worth it just get a rebuil crankshaft and be done.

Between me & Phill, we got six bad cranks laying around. It's just not worth fixing them.

Thanks

Thanks for taking the time to respond. It wasn't the answer I was hoping for but at least I know my options now. Well, I guess I know now that I don't have the option to rebuild my own crank!

I am in no way saying it can't be done ,I have rebuilt quite a few.It is more like it shouldn't be done than can't be done.
