What would you do?

To build or not to build?

I have some spare engine parts lying around. Debating on whether to build a 701 62T engine.

I have a 6M6 engine from a 93 superjet. I have torn it down to the short block. The engine looks so mint. Looks to be very low hours.

I also have a set of 62T cases that are pretty corroded, and the bottom half is pretty much done. The rod went right through the bottom on the front cylinder. The top half of the cases look great. One little little tiny mark from where the rod slapped the side, but other than that, just corroded.

Here is where your advice is need. I would be doing this engine build just the heck of it. I haven't rebuilt a yamaha engine before, and I don't really need an engine for any other ski. I would be doing it just to do it I guess.

Should I tear this 6M6 short block down, use the bottom half of the case and crank, get the top case bead blasted and repainted, and slap them together. I have a 61x cylinder that I need to re-sleeve, and stock 61x head lying around also. Any thing I am over looking when it comes to compatibility?

Recommendations? Comments? :Banane01:

What would you do here? I barely used any force and this bolt broke off. I'm gonna try an extractor. I know what needs to be done, but maybe someone can share their experience with this same thing.

port the 650 and run it with the T cases ( if you already have dual carbs)

if you dont want to spend $$ on carbs, sell your T cases and get some 61x cases, and run them with single carb and ported 650 cylinder.

CHEAP

Why would I port the 650 cylinder when I can just re-sleeve the 61X cylinder I have?

I'm not really planning on setting the engine up with carbs and/or pipe, just want a spare sitting on the shelf, or I might sell it when I'm done building it.

what ever you do, do not use the extractors where you have to drill it then hammer it inplace, I made that mistake.......... you might be better off to just drill it out then chase the threads........

I have a set of extractors that do require you to hammer them into place. I'll give them a shot, but chasing the threads is a good idea also. I might even have the size tap at home already now that I think about it.

you can port the 650 cylinder yourself.

can you resleeve the 61x cylinder for free?

When I built my 701 I sold the 6m6 shortblock for $300 on ebay, and put that towards a NEW crank. I know you need a case bottom half too, but they can be found pretty cheap. You can resleeve the cylinder yourself using the oven or a grill. Get a machine shop to check or deck the top afterwards.

edit : The 650 ran fine when I pulled it out. They're just worth more as a complete shortblock engine, and I'd rather have a new crank.

You think I should even open up the short block first before I sell it just to buy a crank? I have a feeling that this crank is going to be in excellent condition, but who knows.

The absolute best crank I have laid hands on was one that came out of a 650. Supertight tolerances, nice and smooth.
