all of the blue SJ's are prone to having the paint peal off. When you go to paint, you will have to strip all the paint off, I tried to feather sand one that was pealing and everytime the paint would peal when I shot the primer on it..... found it better to just strip it all off.

is it paint or gelcoat? i bet its a pain to get it all off.

It is super easy... when it starts pealing do a sub then when another piece starts flaking up do another sub. NO acutualy mine started pealing and I used a razor blade to get under the piant and striped 1/2 the hood in about 2 minutes. I stoped there because I was getting hot and needed to ride.

Why does the paint come off so easy. its not the first ski ivew seen like this.Amost all blue skis have no paint on the hood.

It will only strip off the hood because that is the only thing that is painted on the ski. Everything else is gel coat so you don't have to worry about paint flaking off.

A friend of mine also has an 03 and he had someone mix him up a custom batch of touchup paint to match the yamaha blue. Anytime mine starts to chip I hit it with this touchup paint and it stops peeling in that area. You just have to be on top of it and not let it get out of control.

It doesnt stick well because of the mold release agent on the surface of the SMC and YAM dont prep it before paint. Also the bottom hull is SMC and is all painted too. The bottoms are known for peeling too.
The only thing that's gel coated on a SJ is the top deck.

Color-rite paint will not be gas or solvent resistant like a auto body paint will be, because there is no hardener in it.

Cool I didn't know that. I never really thought about the bottom cuz the bottom is always so scratched up anyways on people's skis from beaching them.

I dont know about that gas and solvent thing but if you went to a yamaha dealer and asked for some touchup paint for your ski they would order it from colorrite and it would match perfectly. If you get gas on your hood and you still have the stock fuel fill I dont think you should be allowed to leave your house nevermind jetski.
