Skat Trak Magnum pump VS TBM pump insert

I have a Skat Mag pump in my ski which absolutely rocks in the surf. The only downside is that It seems to need bearings/rebuild about every six months or so. The “Bill” always seems to be around $300. My stock pumps have never come apart or even needed bearings. Has any one tried a TBM (Or equivalent) pump insert IN THE SURF side by side with a Magnum Pump? How do they compare? At $300 for a TBM, I’m thinking for the price of one Skat rebuild I could be set for years to come. If performance is similar, any down sides to the TBM Pump inserts? (like can they be removed easily/ do the bolts corrode and break, etc.)

The mag pump uses the stock sized bearings and stock seals, wonder if the seal is sealing correctly. The pump should be just as reliable as stock, i would think.

You'd think so huh? Especially for what a Magnum costs. However I have several riding friends who run Magnums and all seem to need new bearings every 6 months or so. Some times we do get lucky and get a year out of a rebuild, but even at $300 a year it seems I can do better.

i had a tbm cone on my stock pump with my ss 865 and to be honest i didnt even notice it, if you have ever looked at one i cant even see how they are supposed to improve performance, i took it off and bough a mag... notice the difference immediatley

i dont get the $300 rebuild cost, the oem bearings are not that much, prices from greater yamaha

BEARING $19.35 x2 $38.70

OIL SEAL $8.81

personally, I think they are crap in Superjets.

You should be able to buy your pump bearings at any supply house along with seals. Should not cost you barely anything.

I think the TBM was a noticable difference in hookup over just a stock pump. However, the mag pump is a night and day improvement over it in the flat or surf.

Regular mag pumps take the same bearings and seals as an oem pump. Setback mag pumps use a different front bearing. With the money saved on 1 self-rebuild you can buy a press from harbor freight and rebuild your own pump.

I have, and they don't come close. mag pump had much more hookup everywhere and makes better power delivery possible. But, the cone is better than stock, for sure.

And for what it's worth, my rebuilt setback mag has been going strong for 8 months now. Also, the rebuild with Skat rebuild kit, done by Art, didn't cost anywhere near $300 :dunno:

Can't speak for anyone else, but I run the 140 because it was specifically recommended for my setup by the guy that put it together.

Thanks for the input everyone but just to be clear, I’m not talking about a tail cone, I’m talking about the actual pump insert which makes the pump stator the same size as a Mag Pump. I referred to TBM because, if I am remembering correct, that’s who made them first but there are others who make them also. Here’s one I found on Blowsions sight.

http://www.blowsion.com/detail.asp?PRODUCT_ID=02-02-400

Has any one compared one of these to a Mag Pump in the surf?

As for the $300 repairs may be Skat Trak is up selling me and I’m falling for it but my prop always seems to need to repairs/welded, etc in addition to the new bearings and when you add shipping to that, $300 bucks again.

That's exactly what I was talking about. It doesn't compare to a mag, don't fool yourself.
2 rebuild per year are not normal. What does Skat say about this?

i ran the tbm and mag pump back to back... night and day

when i fitted the tbm cone i noticed no difference from stock.. i think i described it before as sprinkling pixie dust in your pump.. although i have heard others say different

maybe it juts dont really work with my set up

i got a set back 144 mag from jetmaniac and im very happy with it
