FX-1 Swapmeet's Sloppy Seconds

I bought a FX-1 hull with the big pump mod to seriously chop up, but in the middle of my research this ski was offered to me. Better to have the work done, and feel confidant that the work is better than I can do at a novice level.

I picked up SuperJetBrett's "Raped FX1000" hull, minus the 1000 LOL...

Here is the build thread if your curious on the history.
http://www.x-h2o.com/threads/74328-...now-getting-xs1000)/page1&highlight=raped+fx1

Basically a FX1 Chopped and re-rockered nose, shortened rear.
SJ pump tunnel and SJ pump mounting area grafted into FX1 hull.
Lowered and reshaped Gunwales.
Footholds
Xmetal Scupper
Reinforced sidewalls
Jetmaniac hood straps
Pole mount moved forward 4"

I'll be adding Tom21 Sponsons.

Unfortunately I don't have the budget for such a exotic mill as the previous owner. But I'm working with what I have, and honestly thats all I can afford.

So heres the basic build info:

Limited 701
Group K Hammer port job
Wisco Pistons
Protec Head 37cc domes.
Factory B pipe
Factory pipe FX1 Chamber

Factory Pump with extra wear ring
C.A.T.S.
Scat 12/17 swirl
Custom length driveshaft

Chopped 08 SJ pole. -3.5
Xmetal Adjustable steering plate, straight bars.
Lowered stainless pole bracket.

Thats about all I can think of right now. Pretty stoaked.

I hope to come up with a sexy paint job even though everyone says the worse the paint the more i'll learn.

Pics to come, i'm a picture whore!

Custom driveshaft is finished. Brett brought over the rest of the pump parts last night and we built the pump and installed impeller for you.

I enjoyed my ride on this hull, Brett put a lot of love into the hull build.

Its a kickace hull, and i'm really glad I was able to pick it up.

Last night I peeled all the stickers off one side... holy crap thats a lot of stickers!

And tonight I played with what my graphics might look like, sanded some junk off the reduction nozzle and painted it. I ground down the trim ring and the reduction nozzle to get more throw out of the trim as well. No pics uploaded their on my big camera, these pics are from my phone.
Last thing I did was fit one of the tom21 Sponsons. The nose is so short I had to grind off a chunk of the sponson so it would fit. UScomposites order is on the way, once I have the sponsons on I can knock out the paint.
As Chris said, the Pump should be in the mail soon, and once I have it, I can work on mounting it and and then the engine.

Well my free time is few and far between with a 6 month old little girl running around being awesome lol...
But as soon as my US composites stuff comes in it's ON!

Me too!!! I worked on it yesterday some, removed the rest of the decals, fitted the other sponson, and pealed up some of the turf.

I found some kickace base coat for my paint, just have to make sure it will be plenty durable. Might put the Protec head on today and do a little glass repair on some holes Brett had in the side.

I'm thinking about putting a stainless U bolt on the under side of the front to tie it down easier. Do ya'll have any thoughts on doing that or not?

I guess i'll share the basecoat paint color LOL... it may change but its the direction I want to head. There will be graphics in conjunction with it.

My painter yelled at me for wanting to use that base coat. But that will be more or less the end result with some graphics.

Stripped the turf off the rails. Harbor Freight Multi tool and 3M Eraser wheel works wonders. Started glassing up the bilge holes in the side. Supposed to pick up my 08+ SJ pole this week so I can chop it down.

Heres some old photos of the work i've completed but haven't pulled if off my camera til last night.

CATS setup, i've 'clearanced' the trim ring and the reduction nozzle to get mor throw.

This shows how much the hull has been shortend. The tubbies are made for a FX1, but I had to cut this part off.

I bought a first gen Protec head. The anodized part didn't look great so I gave it the hot rod treatment. Its not the best work i've done, but the anodizing was super hard to cut through. I dig it, it'll look sweet when I pop the hood.

Harbor Freight has mini roll lock discs. I chucked an abrasive disc in my drill press. Little cutting oil and some patience and you've got it.

The top of the head had a texture cut into it, likely to help hold the anodizing. It made it really hard to get good consistent cuts with the disc.

Looks great! It's the little details that really make it unique.

When you are done with that thing, (if you dont already) you should hook up with the guys that ride out at lake lewisville on sundays. Great group of people out there. Got to ride with them when I was home for a month.

Yeah, I rode with the Lewisville crew 3-4 times last year when I had my first FX1. I plan on spending a lot of time up there. Good people and a lot of knowledge.

On an update note: Got in my chit from UScomposites last night (thank you Dragginblazer) and I hope to be glueing down my Tom21 Sponsons in the next couple days, but the cold weather may hold me up.

Supposedly getting a my 08 pole tomorrow so I can cut it down and wrap it in CF. And should be getting my pump in the mail at any moment.

Update!

My painter said I need to take almost all the rattle can primer off. So sanding hell... everything in my shop is covered in primer dust.
Glued and screwed the sponsons on. Patched up the holes the previous owner used for bilge pissers.

I got my pump in from Jetmaniac, ziptied it together and mocked it up in the pump cavity. Pretty much what I was looking for. (nut buster)

Was able to talk with a seasoned vet about a chronic problem with the FX1. Dislodged hoods on failed rolls. Since I was already in a rough glass stage with the ski, I had an idea. I super glued 1/4" fiberglass rods to the outside edges of the hood seal. The super glue holds the glass in place. Using Epoxy resin with Cabosil, I filled the gaps between the hull and glass rod. Then I cut a strip of fiberglass and layed it over the whole shabang. I'm a little concerned that I didn't use a long enoug piece of glass. But all I had was 12oz on hand, so hopefully that does the trick. (feel free to chime in on that)
I cut about an inch off the end and curved it towards the nose. I'll body work it to make it flow. This should make it much more difficult for the hood to completely come off, even if its dislodged. Intrested in your thoughts on this as well.

I bought a scale, probably a bad idea. Last night I weighed the hood and the pump. I can see why people buy aftermarket lightweight hulls!!!
I'm scared to put the entire hull on the scale, but i'll do it sometime this weekend.
