Opinions needed on this skat 4-7 that I acquired. Would it be better or worse in my OG '88, stock with '92 silver engine and 38mm kehin... currently running a solas 13-18...

4/7 probably means it's a 14/17 pitch. It's hard to say if it would be better or worse when comparing between the Solas and Skat. If it was a comparison between two Skats then yes it would be worse for bottom end but better for top end because the slightly lower pitch will help the engine stay at peak RPM better in rough water instead of getting weighed down from the heavier pitch every time it leaves the water and has to re-load on re-entry. When I had a 650sx I went with a Skat 10/18 and loved it. My assumption with the two you have is you probably won't see much of a difference at all if any.

Thanks so much for the reply! Yes figured it was the 14/17. Is it worth sending to impros for a repitch? I'd like to have a spare, if not I'll just hold on to it. BTW I pulled from a running 650 with a pipe, head 44 carb and water box! Looking to experiment with those parts as well!

Sounds good, I'll try an early Coffman pipe and a westcoast water box that it came with... A lot of ski projects over my long Montana winter!!!
Cheers

Never compare pitch numbers between different mfg's. They are totally different designs..............
couldnt agree more. especially with skat and solas. the solas impellers are good for top end by design. theyre heavier by several grams and the design of them seems to load the engine harder especially at lower rpms. skat impellers are lighter, have a thinner blade design, will in most cases comparing same pitch as solas will accelerate harder and also turn more rpms. the newer larger hub impellers are much better in design such as the hooker. i run a hooker 9/15 in my 93 x2 both with a bolt on 650 and fully built 750 sp. the 750 needs more pitch. but it was perfect with the mild 650.

between the solas and skat impellers id definitely try the skat. you could even lower the pitch on it a few degrees too.

Thanks again for all the input!!
Since we are talking skats... Can I bend some ears on a 12/17 that is in a 95 750sxi that I also aquired, it has factory ltd pipe westcoast head and flame arrestors....

Raising the outside trailing edge will unload the pump noticeably. Just hold the impeller fore/aft in a soft jaw vice and bend the trailing edge up 1/8". I made a custom tool but a heavy hammer will do as well.

i also highly recommend using some heat. its a total pita to do and quite time consuming. i used a large adjustable cresent wrench. impeller choice comes down to what you want it to do. id say a 12/17 is more of a top end impeller if its a big hub design.
