Stock SJ Pole to SXR conversion advice...

I have already ordered my Blowsion UMI conversion kit without pole. I aquired a stock SJ pole in excellent condition for cheap. I want to put it on my SXR. I was wondering if anyone can help me with the specific modifications that need to be made to the stock pole to work. I do not want to change my steering cable or cut the cable either, just in case I purchase a racing pole in the future. I know that this can be done with using my stock steering cable as is, but I am having trouble finding post on this site or pwctoday.com. If any one can point me to a thread or give advice with or without pictures that would be great. Thanks

The only problem I foresee is mounting the steering cable on the left side instead of the right...I am not sure how you can do that on a stock pole... You will probably be doing some chopping.

Im in the process of doing the same thing, thats funny. What you have to do is remove the sxr "flip up" pole stop assmbly, its now useless. Remove the 2 pole stops that help the pole from over extending also. the rubber cable boot can still be used fine.

remove the rubber pad on front of the bracket. If you use the cover on the bottom of the sj pole, you have to grind down the rbs on the bracket for clearance. If you do not use the cover, like me, you do not need to grind the ribs.

for the steering cable issue, I cut open the left side of the pole mount area, and welded in a piece of aluminum angle to make both sides look symmetrical.

I did NOT weld a piece of aluminum over the face of the mount, so the steering cable can still come through. hopefully i can mount my cable mount to the aluminum piece i welded on, or ill just extand it further. Im just waiting on my sj steering kit and blowsion umi cable mount extender and im ready to go. Ive heard you have to grind down the black flip top on the cable mount so it fits under the pole.

heres a picture of the piece i welded. the steering cable mount will be a few inches down the pole, so itll be a pain in the butt to get in and set up correctly, but it will work. One of my friends uses a U bolt and grinds the center out so its thin and that locks in the cable at its mounting point.

you will also have to remove some foam to route the cable correctly. Use a big long screwdriver and start busting it out.

also, I was told you have to move the pole spring al the way to the left, because the tension from the aluminum on the bottom of the pole can snap the spring, my buddy snapped a few this way. secure it in place with a hose clamp is what he told me to do, i might try a different way if i can think of one

hope this helps

edit, it should look sweet like this other sxr...pics

Ice explained it pretty well. Make sure you mount the steering cable so it does not bind. My friend snapped a cable by not mounting it correct.

Oh and if you plan to run a handlepole spring, use sj spring.
I was wondering about the spring. I just let a stock superjet pole spring get away from me on ebay. it sold I think for $0.01 plus $10 shipping. Oh well I'll keep looking.

Another question, I am planning on purchasing 4 degree bars, throttle lever, and ODI Rouge grips setup, but not right away (cauase I'm broke now). Will my stock handle bar setup work for the present time?

ICE- Thank you for that descriptive write up. And the picture. I'll contact you if I need more help. It is funny that we are doing the same setup. I am waiting on my stuff from blowsion also. I remember talking to you on pwctoday about the Xmetal pole, why did you change your mind?

ICE- What year pole are you using? Mine is white also, but mine has a built in steering stop, i see that yours can be removed. There is no way I can remove mine. And the top and bottom bracket on mine is more of a dingy mix between green and grey, not black like yours.

Another question, what do you mean by "Ive heard you have to grind down the black flip top on the cable mount so it fits under the pole."? I can't picture what you are talking about.

i changed my mind because I realized it was ALL expensive, even with my UMI sponsorship. The main factor was the cost of a chinpad, as I did not like stock ones on those poles, they are HUGE. Its also.... alot more expensive PERIOD.

This is a cheaper way to go, and I LOVE how th ac pole look son team kawi skis, but I hear they are a pain in the arse to mount, and dont normally sit correct, somewhat of an angle. I also got this pole for a good deal with a chinpad.

My pole is from a 96 sj, i believe. white and purple. My steering stop is missing, didnt have one. you should be able to remove yours, unless someone welded it on?

My pole is pobably black and yours grey cuz maybe someone painted yours of yamaha got sick of the color and changed it, seeing as they dont like to change the sj much lol.

Its also getting painted kawi kandy green to match.. BLING BLING YO

o ya, black flippy thingy majiggy mabobber flip flop.... the black part of this pictured item mwuahahahaa..... sooo maybe its gold and not black. so sue me:wink:

Well no i don't mean the color of the fiberglass, I mean the color of the metal that you took the grinder and welder to. also, I'll take a picture later, but from what I can tell, there is no way to remove the steering stop. It looks like it part of the mold for the whole piece. But anyways, take some pictures when you are done. My handle pole is while like the 96 and 97's.

yes you will

and i came across an issue you should know about. when welding in your angle, make sure you make it extra long so it goes further into the inside of the pole. you should, before welding, drill holes and mock up where your steering cable holder will go, and THEN weld the angle of aluminum in.

I am now making a custom cable bracket like UMI's but making it a few inches longer, that way I can bolt the cable mount down correctly.

By welding the backside flush, i have NO room to bolt my bracket to since it will sit so far inside the pole

hope that makes sense to you

So what are you going to use for bushings? I ordered the blowsion bushing, but I have been reading that I may have to make some custom spacers to take up the slack that the blowsion bushings miss. Am I correct?

I took my bushings to work and had them spin'em on a lathe, they fit fine now.

there is a SLIGHT gap in the bushings, i just took a 1/8th ( it might be thinner, I dont remember) nylon washer that I got from ACE by my house and stuck it in one side. Its pretty much slop free now, I think once its tight itll be 100% slop free, or ill add another nylon washer.

went back out in my garage and tightened the bolt down with the extra nylon washer, no play at all! I believe the washer is 1/16th or so thick, very thin. but it does the trick!
