Yamaha, Is This a Pro-Tec Rec Head? O-Ring Problem

I used the "mcmaster carr parts list" thread to order me some o rings for my pro-tec rec head for my yamaha 61x 701. They came and they arent the right size. They are about half the size they should be.

Is the right head for my 61x 701??
Or did mcmaster send me the wrong o rings?
Or is the list wrong?

I have a lake powell trip planned in a week and need this ski running!!!:fingersx:

Pictures are shiznat with the flash on, sorry. Im going to get some more. EDIT: POS WONT UPLOAD EITHER....like the pic of the top of the head so you can actually tell what it is..... I'll get new pics tomorrow morning.

In the one pic the BROWN o ring on the right are the ones i got from McMaster Carr and the BLACK o ring on the left are the old ones that fit but are hammered.

Any Help is appreciated! Thanks!

I got your pm. Sorry about the confusion with the mcmaster thread. You are going to need to run the -153 oring, mcmaster pn 9464K114. These are what protec orignally told me to run, but they didn't fit my head correctly. Apparently, there are two different styles of this head floating around because mine definitely takes the -043 and is clearly unmodified. Here is my post about pretty much the same topic:

http://www.x-h2o.com/threads/35269&highlight=protec+oring

Sorry again for recommending the wrong ones, I'll go back now and edit the mcmaster thread.

Hey, can post a good clear pic of the top of your head? I see some distinguishing features between the two on the bottom of the head but it would be nice to be able to tell the diff with the head mounted. Notice the differences in the water jacket passages between the domes on mine vs yours.

New pics, camera still doesnt like taking close up pictures. Want to trade the my small rings that will fit your head for the large ones that will fit my head?:naughty:

My head is a different head than yours..... im starting to wonder if this really is a yamaha 701 head or maybe for a different ski.

I bought this junker jet for 200 bucks so i could pull the b pipe out of it. Then i went to look at it and it had a impeller, ride plate, and this head on it so i said deal! I figured why not try to run this head instead of buying a stocker. I was going to sandblast it and paint it today because i cleaned it all up last night.

Whats your opinion?

I should have just measured it in the first place before i ordered them..... I think im just going to order the larger ones and they will fit. Whats up with mcmaster shipping my o rings in a BIG freakin box when they could have fit in a envelope, $1 shipping vs. $6 shipping....

Thanks!

UPDATE

The pictures above from 'dustin mustangs' are of the heads that takes the smaller -043 O-rings (mcmaster pn 5267T57). The temperature sensor boss is on the exhaust side next to exhaust mounting holes.

The pictures below are of the heads that take the larger -153 O-rings (mcmaster pn 9464K114). The temperature sensor boss is on the intake side away from the exhaust mounting holes. Also note that with this head if you run a protec half girdle kit it will cover up the temperature sensor boss.

Buy several sets of O-rings as your going to replace them very often with that Pro-Tec head when you start to really make good power, they don't handle the heat very well, especially here in Florida.
ADA billet heads with replaceable domes are way better on o-ring life.

That head is most definitely a yami head. You can tell by thte head bolt pattern and the mounting boss for the temp sensor. It is also very different from mine, top and bottom. If you are worried and want to double check anything it would be the bore size and maybe squish. Also, do check the compression before you fire it up to make sure you are safe for pump gas. Oh, and it looks like that haed has been repainted at least once already. If you do it again, I'd suggest taking a straight file and lapping the paint off all the high spots in the casting like they are when the come from protec (like mine).

Like I said in my pm, I have the correct orings for it and will send them to you if you'd like. If you want, you can send me your skinny ones too.

Supertune - I've never heard these have issues with blowing out orings. Good thing to know. So far so good for me (once I got the correct size) on a full limited setup after a half dozen or so tanks of gas.

I ran a old skool Pro-tec head like that for 10+ years on some SS and very strong 6m6/61X ltds. with no problems. I always used the Ultra Blue RTV like Pro-tec reccomended to seal it down.

Dont forget to at least wear your half girdles too.

I measured it out and it is the correct head. I guess pro tec made a newer casting of the same head for some reason. I did get it all cleaned up with the paint, the person who painted this before was a idiot to put it lightly.

Hopefully the rings that will be on my doorstep tomorrow will be the correct ones. I'll still trade you the rings though, Dustin Mustangs, if you want once i get back from powell.

Superjet-113, thanks for the gaskets. Also im only running stock porting and a b pipe with this head on 61x cases and 61x cylinders. Im also at about 3900 ft in elevation. Do you think will need a girdle kit?

Thanks for the help guys

I would recommend at least the Pro-tec half girdle. Once you take off the OEM exhaust and add after market exhaust and get more power, RPM's, and vibrations the cylinder can crack.
Most crack and mine cracked on the carb side rear area above the corner. I'm sure many can attest to this.
I got the cylinder welded and bought the 1/2 girdle kit and never had a problem after that.

Its stock ported yea! :Banane25:

I did alot of reading about the cracked cylinders and if i cant get this half girdle kit here in by this friday i HOPE my cylinder will not crack on at least one ride at the lake so i can jet it in.

I forgot to update and tell everybody thanks for the help.

I got the ski back together in time for powell and it was one awesome week of riding!

I got the half girdle kit on and the right o rings, im assuming my head i have is an older casting. It has the temp sensor hole on the intake side and it uses the -153 larger o rings. Im assuming the head dustin mustangs has is a newer casting, it has the temp sensor hole on the exhaust side and it uses the smaller -043 o rings. With the temp sensor hole on the exhaust side it also wont get covered up by a half girdle kit.

Thanks for the help!:Banane25:

Beware, my Pro-Tec head with the temp sensor on the same side as the exhaust bolts takes the larger O-Ring, NOT the smaller o-ring which is not what’s stated above.

Old post but this is not true! My head has the temp sensor on the same side as the exhaust mounts and it takes the larger -153 O-Rings.

The link is https://www.mcmaster.com/9464k114 2 for $2.86 (+$7 shipping)
I did call pro-tec tech line at (951) 698-8988 to verify which o-ring size I needed (they have a small and a large for varying thickness of the o-ring). They were great help! Suggest calling them if you have any doubt. With my fixed domes, and black outer paint I needed the larger size. See pics.
And yes , I used RTV to seal the water jacket. Just covered the silver "figure 8 "area on the last pick and placed the head. Tightened by hand, waited an hour, then tightened all to 18, then to torque spec... 22 for head bolts, 25 for head girdle bolts.

Can't thank you enough! I will do the exact same on my engine.

Dave,
Got the O rings from McMaster and they fit perfectly. I used a bead of Yamabond around the perimeter as well. Engine went together well and I plan to have it tucked back into the hull soon. Cleaning up the engine and engine bay a bit to make her pretty first.
