Why chop rear of superjet?

I have a 96 superjet and about to cut open tray to remove waterlogged foam. considering it will be very easy to chop the rear. I know many people do this, but why? Whats the advantages and disadvantages? improve the ride or make it worse? I know shorter hulls are unstable at speed so does this hinder that much?

It will help the nose lift more, ride like a current freestyle hull. It just depends on what you are wanting if this is better for you or not.

Awesome. Have any of you guys done this personally? Anything I need to know or look out for? Especially cutting tray open, I don't want to cut pump tunnel. Also whats the best tools to use, different blade for the exhaust pipe or just cut through it?

Yes, on multiple skis. Did it a few different ways (glassing the "cap" back on after shortening & cutting at an angle and glassing from the inside). Go slow, tape off your area, if you buzz a line through the top of the pump tunnel it's not the end of the world (done that too and it's an easy fix). I have always used a dremel with cutoff wheel or angle grinder with skinny wheel. You can remove the exhaust tube by drilling out the rivets, softening up the glue with a lot of heat and pounding it out from the inside. This step is after you've opened up the tray and defoamed around the tube.

Okay, I already drilled out the rivets and tried to pry it off. thanks for the information!

Is there a space between the tray and the pump tunnel. and how big should my box cut out be?
 
Yes there's a little space, make shallow passes and don't bury the blade and you'll be fine. Bigger the better IMO if you're defoaming, see the pics in link BK posted for reference.
 
Got it open, thanks everyone. Now to refoam or once it’s out leave it out?

I have used a large serrated kitchen knife (wife still doesn't know it's missing ;) ) to make slices into the foam.That should keep the nasty dusty part down to a minimum (go slow and easy).Then a wire wheel and vac next to it to remove the rest.l haven't ever tried a pressure washer (thanks Quinc) but that seems like a great idea.
